I stopped in a backwoods country diner and had a HUMUNGOUS chicken fried steak, double mashed potatoes with enough brown gravy to float the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, coleslaw, green beans, and then a huge piece of apple pie with vanilla ice cream on it.

If my wife knew what I'd had or the quantity, she'd have shot me, but i hadn't eaten anything in about 26 hours and was about to eat the cover off of my steering wheel, or chase down a squirrel or something.

Smokes and a ashtray on the table? haven't seen that in years, are you still able to smoke in restaurants in TX? Here in Ca. you can't smoke within 20ft of any public door way and never inside.

That was the patio, but SOME places you still can inside. But not within Houston city limits. Don't know about Austin, though. This is my last week as a smoker, so I enjoyed it while I still can. Starting the patch next week ;) Say a few prayers for me that I have the strength to quit :D

Congrats on the attempt... and will def think about you and send up some prayers that all goes well... I know it is a hard habit to stop... and am so glad that I did when I did.. have never regretted my decision to stop smoking... although I have thought about it, and craved em a few times since... I haven't started again.... I always hit up some sunflower seeds or something when I get a craving or get stressed....

Thanks James, I go through a few bags of sunflower seeds a week! I've tried everything else other than the patch. The problem with the gum is that you have the choice.... smoke, or chew a piece. Hard to make the right decision every time. With the patch on 24 hours a day, it's constant supply of nicotine and should work better. AND you aren't supposed to smoke while wearing it. ;)

I call it my white trash meal. You butterfly a hotdog (a real hotdog). German mashed potatoes which consist of stone ground mustard in the mash potatoes. Throw in peas. On a baking sheet. Lay out the hotdogs. Scoop in the potatoes. Grated cheddar on top. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Side was a frisée salad. All but the hotdog & cheese was from my garden. But sources were local. Including the beer, OBC IPA.
I don't know how to upload pix

Tonight's dinner will be a penne pasta salad w a green bean salad. First cook the penne to your likings. Let it come to room temp. Throw it into a mixing bowl. Toss with arugula. Do a simple balsamic vinegret w olive oil. Chop up a little basil from the garden. Mix it all together. I've got a 2" thick New York steak. I salt & pepper it. Let the steak come to room temp as well. Never cook meat straight outa the fridge. Big no no. A few minutes before you pan fry it (cast iron of course). Dress the streak with herbs de Provence. Cook for 8 minutes on one side. 6 minutes the other side. Medium flame for color. Color equals flavor. Once done. Place it on a cutting board let that cool for a few. Then cut 6mm slices vertical. You should have about 12-15 slices of steak. Throw the penne/arugula into a pasta bowl topped with a few slices of steak.
Green bean salad: blanch the green beans. Boil water in a 5 quart stock pot. Once it boils. Throw in a bunch of salt. Stir. Throw in green beans for about 5 minutes. Strain the water. Throw the green beans in ice bath. It stops the cooking of the green beans. In a bowl 3/4 cups creme fresh w the juice from one lemon. Whisk that together. Finely chop up some dill. Take about 3 or 4 cups niciose olives & do a rough chop. Toss it all together in a mixing bowl with creme fresh/lemon juice. Done & done!

Last night ?I got off work late so I decided to eat a little Asian, ..... he put up a fight at first, but eventually succumbed to my knife and fork.
No, no ...in all seriousness, I ordered some Vietnamese/Thai ....called Pad Prik King.... its onions, peppers, green beans and chicken sauteed in a s-picy garlic/ginger sauce.... I get it extra hot of course with a small truck load of crushed chili peppers in it, and served over a bed of steamed sticky rice.

Tonight I will be making some coconut curry braised pork chops in a succulent butter sauce served with some gigantic fresh steamed artichokes and a side of onion broiled new potatoes...... should be pretty tasty.

The story behind this is about a week ago I wandered into the living room and my wife was watching one of those food shows. This one was about BACON so I had to sit down and watch. Basically the show was taking you to places around the country that severed one primary thing BACON!

They started with a place in Austin, TX. The name of the restaurant? BACON

Brass was in Austin on business so he took the challenge and stopped by. These are the pictures of his, ummmm, adventure! :bacondance:

Actually, saturday night dinner was an outdoor event.

... bits of duck floating in wine and chilli and stuff ... done in a camp oven ... ummm dutch oven ?? ... on a bed of coals.

... with pork chops, beef sausages and rissoles, chicken kebabs, on the bbq grill over the other fire,

... a curried lamb stew simmering in a pot on another bed of coals .... nahhhh, don't fret ... it was one of the little fellas, bigger, cousins .. :D

... and lotsa rums ... coz the 20ft square, 10ft high bonfire was barely keeping us warm in 30*f temps .. ;);) .. :D:D
