The sound reminds me of either a bad tire (or bent rim) or that sound you get when driving down the freeway in CA over the "heat expansion" cement sections.
It's not the engine as I only hear it when rolling. And from inside the jeep, I'd guess it was coming from the front passenger side wheel.
I just put on newer tires after they were mounted and balanced at a shop.
So, that eliminates the tire from the list.
Also, I discovered my CAD had failed in the 'locked' position, so my front axle has been locked since I've had it. But I did pull the cover off and slide the fork over. Still made the sound...
I picked up a set of hubs that I haven't had time to install yet, but either this weekend or next. And as long as I was swapping the hubs, I picked up a pair of u-joints...
I did notice that the cheap looking plastic "thing" ~ I believe is called an "Axle Shaft Inner Slinger" was broken and ~ just there. I was thinking maybe a piece of dirt or ()*& found its way into???
So, the question is, if I'm pulling the ends of my axle out to swap the hubs and u-joints, is there another bearing or something right there that could be easily changed while it's apart?
Here's an exploded pic. of the Dana 30
1919
... it appears that in addition to the "Slinger" thing, there's an "Inner Axle Oil Seal" and a "Outer Axle Shaft Bearing" or an "Inner Bushing Bearing"
Could those be the issue?
Are they a PITA to change?
Other ideas?
