View Full Version : The Cherokee weak point?

On my 2000 F350 7.3l Powerstorke, people have been saying the only weak thing about my truck is its tranny. The engine and axles are solid. So what would you say is the weak point of the Cherokee?

I would think 00-01 would be the head problem but are Cherokees know to have tranny problems?

They all have marginal cooling systems

I would agree, cooling for engine and transmission are killers...

What they said. The marginal OEM cooling for the engine and the AW4 tranny will cause troubles after you have upgraded the "normal" things (lift, tires, etc)

Thanks for the tip....Does it bolt right in? or does it take and mods? Or would it be easier to get one of those hats with the cup holders built in.

I'll add electrical to the list.

Lots of the wiring is just like the cooling system ... barely adequate for stock tasking.

The gearbox ... if your talking about the AW4 - or A340 as toyota calls it ... is another one of the XJs good points imho ... as long as you address its cooling needs.

Another weak point is the rear axle, if its a D35. I would also say that stock rear leafs are a weak point, they tend to sag after not long.

CLick on the Amazon(dot)com banner from :xjtalk: then search the automotive section for Jeep Cherokee cup holder. This will come up. $6.62 and it bolts right in without drilling any holes right in front of your console over the E-brake lever.

Mine has always remained below the 210 mark, even on the hottest summer days. If I'm idling or something, it'll creep up to it and the electric fan comes on and brings it right back down. Of course mine is a manual with no tranny cooler and it's not lifted yet, running on stock tires. We will see what it does after the lift and bigger tires.

Another would be the vacuum lines. Don't think many XJs out there without issues with vacuum.

Have you ever seen a large person try to get in and out of the rear doors?
I don’t know if that’s a design flaw or pure comic genius

I have one of those... they suck. Everything falls out of them.. and Gatorade/Powerade bottles don't fit in them at all.

I would say cooling for both engine and trans, the D35, and some electrical especially on the 97- XJ's... so if you can find yourself a 97 w/ the Ch. 8.25 axle (especially 29spline), and do yourself some upgrades as far as the cooling... adn you'd be doing pretty good for an XJ!! And you'd have 2 cup holders factory!!

Yeah, I wondered about that. I almost don't care anymore. THere are NO cup holders that works with the mugs, etc. that I use. Especially factory ones. In every semi I've owned, I've modified them to fit, and I'm sure this on wouldn't be any different.

Cut 'em out and use something to make a different bottom. No big deal and it's fairly easy to make it look good to.

Get yourself a hat please. Preferably a hard hat and post some pics here of you driving with it. Thats just pure awesome.

Ive never had a problem with my cooling system or fuel system (Airtex unit) The only thing ive had problems with is the track bars.

Original design was two door, they modified it to be a four.

There are a couple of minor mods nothing major. May take all of about 15 to 20 mins to swap. Make sure if you do the upgrade to get every piece of the console. The heater vent(for the back)and the box that goes under it as well. The screw placement will not be the same for s couple of them, you can only get a few screws in it to hold it down but they do the job.

The front doors on the four door are shorter than the two door but i kinda wish they would have made them a little smaller so the rear could be bigger. I wonder if a hinge that opened more would help? Hmmm.

Ya, that is one complaint I have had after I bought the XJ for the wife. The rear doors as so small and I wish they would open up to about 90 degrees.

I figure if we keep the XJ then I will upgrade the cooling for both engine and tranny.

My jeep seeps oil in places, but doesn't leave a drop on the ground. Still, my wife comments about my engine having oil on it. I just tell her that my '95 XJ is really more advanced that her '03 Vitara because the engineers at jeep built in a self applying crucial components rust protection system.
