What is the vac disconnect supposed to do? Bought a YJ 30 and realized what I had once I got it home. If I understand things, it just keep the diff and DS from spinning when not in 4wd. There's talk of being able to do a manual lockout on it? does this lock the axle? Another opinion was put an XJ inner shaft in it to bypass the vacuum deal altogether.

to manually make it full time 4x4 all you need to do is move a c-clip on the vacuum pod

as in full-time where the tires can turn at different speeds like a standard open carrier right?

ok. I think I'll just put in an XJ inner and not have to worry about it. Thx Matt.

So this talk of posi-lok is just an open carrier... makes no sense

What about something like a differential cable lock from someone like Alloy USA?
Do those just replace the vacuum line with a pull cable system?
... thus effectively being able to unlock the axle still when driving at higher speeds on the highway...

I primarily drive my XJ on the highway at 65 - 75 mph to get to and from drill weekend.

If you get the cable lock, you cannot lock while in motion. The shafts are spinning the opposite direction. You could possibly do it if you shift in 4WD first though. Otherwise you must stop first

x2^

I just did the c clip movement like matt mentioned on the womans YJ. It just makes it to where it acts like a regular dana 30 with out the vacuum disco. VERY simple

Now this made me think of something,

If you get the cable disco and put lunchbox locker in the front, that would make it more like a selectable locker, right? cuz the drivers shaft & the the passenger inner shaft would always spin like a normal d 30, Put it in 4x4 with the cable not pulled, and you have 3x4 with the front drivers garanteed to spin, then pull the cable and the front locks and you have a front locked 4x4? would that work well or be prone to breakage?
