I need to replace the motor in my 1995 XJ (4.0l), and I have been able to locate quite a few low mile 1996 and up motors at a decent price, but not lower mile 1995 and older H.O. motors. So My question is, what years will work for my swap? I know that '96 and up is OBD II, and my XJ is OBD I. Can it be done, and if so will I need to do any modifications?

Thanks,
Tony

You could use the96 - 99 motor if you change the intake and all related sensors and use the 95 flywheel/flexplate

I read something about also having to drill and tap the head to accept the temp sending unit from the older motor. Any truth to that?

Some heads have the hole for the temperature sender there already, You would just have to take the plug out.

Any difference between the auto and manual?
I wouldn't think so, but a few wrecking yards have asked.

Nope, they are the same block.
