Today I stepped on my driver side rear tire to clean my roof and heard a weird noise in the hub. Seeing as how I'm driving a couple hundred interstate miles tomorrow evening I pulled off the wheel to inspect the hub and brakes. When I pulled off the outer drum case thing these two pieces fell out!! There's also a skinny steel cable attached to a piece of metal with a spring on the inside that is just hanging around in there. Looking at diagrams I'm pretty sure the cable has something to do with the adjuster but I can't figure out what the pieces that fell out are for. The long piece appears to have been floating in the drum for a long time as its ground down in several directions and then dust stained on some ground flat points.

My question is: What are these pieces and are they paramount for safety and proper function of rear brakes?

Parking brake fulcrum. Might have the parking brake cable loose now or the lever might be loose too. Those should be secured

If emergency brake cable retaining clip lost, make one using washer :D

It's just for the parking brake though? Regular brakes will be ok for the trip?

And I would have looked at the other side but I had to be at work and didn't have time to pull it apart.

Those pieces are just the parking brake. But it would help if you took a current pic of it. We could tell you in an instant if everything else looks OK
