Thanks ya'll for warm welcome! I will throw some pics up as soon Florida quits flooding. I owned one but it was a '85 with 2.8 that had a lot of issues many years ago, after riding in a friends with a 4.0 a while back I realized 2 completely different vehicles.
Trying to figure out some popping sound I am getting in 4wd right now, replaced a bad u-joint thinking that was it but seems to be something else. Not the right place for a question and will give up and beg for help in the proper location after a few more checks, lol.

Here is when I first got her, since then got 30" tires, new brakes, new DS axle u joint and swaybar bushings. I still need a grill and headlight surrounds and make some bumpers.

Well finally got to use the XJ's 4wd today so time for a formal intro, lol.

I got my Jeep off of craigslist about 6 weeks ago, been looking for a while for a cheap 4wd to use for camping and going around the forest in. I live in Florida real close to the GA line so a lot of mud and swampy areas to drive through. Anyways, paid $450 for it and drove it 90 miles home after going by a Walmart and grabbing a new battery. It had right at 200k miles but runs like a top.
The bad I realized as soon as I backed out of PO's driveway was NO BRAKE PEDDLE and very little brakes, and as soon as I got on highway I discovered the worst shimmy I have ever felt in a vehicle.
First week I replaced the brakes and put a set of 30x10.5 tires I got used from a friend that got bigger tires. So brakes fixed and tires fixed the shimmy.
Next problem I found when I used the 4wd first time, a very loud popping sound that sounded like it was in the front end so I replace the axle shaft u-joints, still didn't fix it so I drained the transfer case and stuck my finger in to check the chain, after being recomended that might be the source of my noise, yup, it was very loose. So this Saturday I attacked it, was my first time so took most of the day but wasn't too bad of a job. So that brings me up to date to actually being able to use my 4wd today in Osceola Forest and currently very happy with my XJ.
The next things on my list is put a grill and trim on the front, PO rearended someone and ruined the grill, bumper, and bent the fender on passenger side pretty bad, was able to straighten the fender pretty good by laying on ground and using a 2x4 and hammer. After that will probably be a 3" JY lift and getting a friend to make me some bumpers then some better tires.

So if ya read all of that thank you will attempt to post some pictures next post.

I guess it really depends on the wear and tear, but I had to learn the hard way to replace chain, main and driven gear. I went through 3 chains.

That is a concern of mine, how long was the chains lasting you? The gears didn't look bad but I know that don't always mean much.

Sounds like you are getting on it Terry. As for the tcase chain, it is a good idea to replace the sprockets with the chain. Especially if you have the full time 4WD option. A worn sprocket puts a lot of force on each link of the chain and wears it out pretty fast when in use.

After I get a few more things done might grab me a spare TC from the jy and go through it completely. Now ya'll got me wondering how long my new chain will last before I end up in the same 2wd situaution again, lol. It's nice not having to lock the hubs but it sure would help wear and tear on stuff. I used to have a full size blazer with locking hubs, PITA having to get out when stuck to lock but never had a TC issue but for the gas it drank I could replace a ton of TC chains, lol.

There is something to be said for old school technology. Those cases didn't have chains in them. Just the newer stuff.

A few months each time, I believe, less than a year. Yeah the gears looked fine to me too, but then again I had never seen new ones! ;)

Been a while since i posted but still loving my XJ, so far the TC chain is holding up. She's changed alot, now lifted 5", on 33s, homemade light bar and never clean for very long, lol

Thanks, yep, friend gave me that after busting my grill going nose down in a ditch, if i didn't like all my dents would probably change fenders to match the late model ones.
