View Full Version : Tail light issues

I have changed up the tail light buckets on my 91 a couple times. I wanted to Have a single light with a sealed beam reverse light but have ran into some tricky issues.
I know that I need a trailer light convertor (take the separate brake and blinker and "blend" them to a single light), not an issue, works perfect as is. The tricky thing is, if I remove the lights from the jeep, and run them thru the "blender" I only have tail lights. Now if I step on the brake and then turn on the blinker, I have that corresponding light. Wire in the lights on the jeep and everything works properly, including the "blender" :banghead:
I have bought a set of THOR4x4 corner guards and want to only have one light. Has anyone else had this problem? What was done to remedy it? :sign0181:

Sorry if I have posted in the wrong spot.

Nothing like a little extra armor in back and tougher tail lights. One of mine has been missing a little chunk from a tree limb hitting it. They are expensive even at wrecking yards

That's exactly why I wanted to make the boxes. I a just not wanting to have to have seperate brake and blinkers.

I suspect a ground issue. On the lights your using do you have 3 terminals like big truck trailer lighting? Im 99% sure 1 is for tail lights, 1 is for brake/turn signal, 1 is ground. Im sure the blender has provisions for a ground but did you add your own ground to the lights?

Seperate grounds. I have wired several of these and never had any issuses untill I tried "skipping" past the lights and putting the blender before the load. Just doesn't make any sence.

You said you didnt have any trouble till you tried skipping past the lights. What do you mean by that? I think I know whats going on there but a rough schematic/diagram would help. You may have answered your own question?

Are you using LEDs or standard bulb lights? If you're using LEDs, make sure you got the convertor kit specifically for them and you also need to switch to an electronic flasher (#43018).

I am using standard bulbs. LEDs are nice but not needed.

LEDs are nice and I'm glad I went that route. Bright as heck at night.

Mine is wired the way you're looking to do yours. I'd go back and double check that everything you wired is correct and that your grounds are good. Are you running a standard flasher as well? I'm not sure, but with the convertor box, it may not draw enough amps to work right. Last thing I could think of would be a bad module.

Emptypockets, I was thinking bad modual too, so I bought a new one from NAPA and wired it in. Same problem. Grounds are fresh and clean. How would a flasher unit not allow you to have brakes lights.
Did you cut the original sockets iut of the loop or just tap into the wiring?

You know what, even on my first Cherokee I had to still run seperate brake and blinkers. Thats why I used the big tail light. Where the reverse lite would have been was actually the blinker. Damn this is terrible. I can fix a tail light issue on a Pete and 53' trailer but not on my own Jeep! :bang:

Here's how my junk is wired up:

I spliced into the main harness:

I retained the factory wiring harness out to the lights and butt connected the new connectors on:

Before anyone says anything, these were taken before I melted any of the connectors. Hope this helps you out.

Hmm. Yeah thats how I wired mine up too. What was the convertor that you used. I tried two different Hoppy ones, no luck there.
