View Full Version : Bored out throttle body.

A few years ago I installed some Mustang injectors. Never noticed any improvements. Recently Matt and I installed a new 4.0 engine with a mild crane cam. Had a few issues with it but it's all been worked out, mostly. Also this build included a 99+ intake manifold. Everything screams more air!

1262

One item is the 10.5 mpg I am getting. This is between 1 and 2 mpg less than I was getting before.

Matt and I discussed a while back about a bored out throttle body. Since any internal combustion engine is just an air pump, I thought I'd try another throttle body and see if more air in, would make a difference.

1260

1261

I measure mpg each fill up, so it will be interesting to see what changes this throttle body makes, if any.

Not to mention the seat dyno :D

IMHO installing Ford Mustang injectors (~28PSI @ what pressure?) on a normally aspirated 4.0 engine, which is what you seem to have even with the new intake, is most always a waste of $$ and fuel. I hesitate to give advice here since I'm new, but I get much better mileage than that (15 min. city, 20+ highway) with my 4.6 stroker. W/o going into a lot of details, it all boils down to a balance of suck and blow. I have no idea what your engine build specs are, but think you should concentrate more on the blow part, headers and 2.5" exhaust to balance things out. A bored throttle body probably will not help the MPG, might even make it worse. Whenever I do a major suck or blow mod, I head for the dyno. The butt dyno doesn't work well. My little stroker makes pretty good numbers because it's well balanced. And an A/F meter in the cockpit to fine tune the details is mandatory to get it right on, especially regarding fuel delivery. Check this link out and see what you think.

Where did you pick that beauty up from, or did you have a spare you got machined?? I have been thinking about picking up a slightly bored TB for when I do my 99+ IM swap... and especially for if/when I do my budget stroker build...

my stroker is love hate. Have a taper bored 62-65 mm throttle body on mine. It is noticeable but if i could get more out of the exhaust without pulling the head off again i would. I have 24# injectors on a 2000+ intake. Port matched head as well.

Are you gonna machine the opening in the intake manifold to match the tb?

You know I've never done this before, I just assumed it was the same size. Way to ruin my night! lol

up to 62 you are ok anything bigger and you have to think about boring the intake. Also if you bore out the intake it won't do much anless you have bored and stroked for more c.i.

ive got a 63mm Throttle body on mine, i got it from stroked jeep. it came with a gasket too and powder coated red, the intake on mine didnt look like it needed to be bored out any it was dead even with the hole in my throttle body.
Check this guy out Tony, hes in houston too

Did you notice any differences?

Did you notice any differences?

i noticed better throttle response and it liked getting up in the rpms quicker, not sure about MPG, maybe 1?
i noticed the best MPG when i put in dodge neon injectors

Well I noticed no mpg improvements, really of any kind, with the Mustang injectors. So maybe this will wake them up.

Have a hole in that a pillar gauge pod that needs filled? lol

I mean i could have noticed the more power when i put the APN header, 2.5 in exhaust high flow magnaflow cat, flowmaster and dumped it at the axle and throttle body. i did do all of that at the same time

I've been trying to track down an APN header.. already got the 2.5" exhaust, just need the high flow cat, bored TB, 99+IM and upgraded injectors... oh and the budget stroker build.. LOL.. But I def. want to try and source out a bored TB like this for when the IM gets swapped out and the injectors..

I've got a spare 4.0 TB and I've been tinkering with the idea of boring it out.

Thanks for the info.

will if you are running the mustang injector they put more fuel into the cyl.than the stock injector so when you start useing the bigger thottle body you will get more air to go with the fuel you get better response and mpg if you watch your foot.

That is what I'm thinking, also with the 1995 head, 1999 Intake, mild Crane Cam, etc... It should be able to process that additional air. The dent is out of the down pipe. A new free flowing cat and muffler. I even bought a exhaust flow meter, ZERO psi back pressure! :D

you do need some backpresher but to go with the intake you should install a bigger airtube and a high flow filter.now you do know the best speed for mpg
from a cherokee is 40-50 after the 60 and up your mpg goes down becouse of the body shape and desine.

A few years ago when I still had my original 4.0 engine I bought a junkyard throttle body, had it bored out to 62mm, and made a 62mm throttle plate for it. Cost me less than $50. Didn't notice any difference at WOT but part-throttle response was much sharper and it made the car more fun to drive.

So you are getting a small increase?

Prior to this the highest I have seen with this new motor was 10.90, back in December.

Only time will tell, but the last two mpg measurements indicate a possible positive trend.

Very cool. It is good to see good data. I would expect that you would see small, but positive benefits. Manufacturers always overrate results
