Does anyone have any experience with them, esp on an XJ. I found a wireless setup (on Amazon) that has a thin bar that mounts to the top two license plate bolts.

I'm wondering in the grand scheme of things if it'd be worth it. I'd love to find one that would let me record the camera. Between that and the dash cam, I could come up with some cool trail vids.

I think Matt (msmoorenburg) installed one a short while back. Never had one personally.

That's where I am looking at mounting one. Now I'm even more tempted to pull the trigger.

This is what I'm looking at getting.

My wife wants a back up camera for her TJ, but I cannot find one that I like. Matt's solution was a good one because the viewing screen is built into the in dash radio. Problem is (at least for me) it's not a name brand.

I think we all know there is really limited space in a Jeep, and a viewing screen mounted to the dash is just another reason for some crack head to break in and steal something they won't get $10 for.

I remember seeing a guy who was a HAM and worked in sales. He got a new company car every 2 to 3 years. He made up a mount for a detachable faceplate out of a motorcycle mount and a water bottle half filled with plaster of paris. I figure something like that could work. Or I have afew ideas to mount the monitor somewhere so that it's not on the dash.

I'd also love some info about the radio solution. That looked pretty sweet.

I have wanted to get one like that Tim for my wife's van. But lately I have wanted to get a dash cam for my XJ and wouldn't mind a rear facing camera as well. However, I would prefer it to record as I don't need any help backing the XJ. With 3 big windows back there it isn't hard to see.

A lift makes it a little harder, and then add a spare tire! :rolleye0012:

I rigged up a dash cam out of an old smart phone and a window mount.

At one point, I was considering building a lexan box and making a bumper mount for it.

The dashcam from Chinavasion is $86. It automatically starts recording when it receives 12volts, and shuts down when it stops. It has an internal battery. It's really handy since you don't have to remember to turn in on and off.

Anyway if you're looking for some HD 1080 video from the rear, or the front this is a great camera.

Not a backup camera of course.

I was thinking about getting a 2nd one and mounting it looking out the back window.

I bought one for my motor home and mounted it high up so I could see the trailer love it. I have a 08 F150 that has one showing the pic in the rear view mirror. I like it but I only use it to hook up the trailer one shot every time

Problem I see with those is thats a mirror cover and I really wouldn't want to put more weight on a mirror glued to the glass. Now if they had one that replaced the mirror that might be okay.

It's only $80 on Amazon. I may pull the trigger on that one.

Wireless is relatively new and not a good medium for high bandwidth data transfers, especially video. Just my opinion. I'd rather run a wire and have crystal clear video all the time.

Here's one from the same place Tony got his dash cam (Chinavasion).

It has a front and rear camera and it's wired (not wireless) for $84.88

Cool. I didn't see that one, or I thought it was front only.

I like this. I am thinking about some cameras for spotting my wheels in the rocks. Easy to remove when it rains etc.

While shopping around, I've seen quite afew cheap cameras integrated into license plate brackets. Those would have to be pretty weather proof. I wonder if you could just use those.

I saw the camera only for as low as like $7.99 online.

I have looked into this a little for my purposes. For instance there is a trail I want to go on, no name that I know of, but you must keep the passenger side tire on a long sharp ridge of granite or you roll. So, before I tackle this I decided the front locker had to be in, which it is now and I need a real good spotter or be able to see the position of the tire. There were some cheap versions out that some local guys tried but didn't hold up. They would not hold up to the vibrations of a dedicated 4X4. So I am sort of ruling out cheap for now. Secondly, I would take these units off when not wheeling rocks anyway. The detachable nature at the dash in inviting.

I have a rear view camera like the one tony posted Dont really know what chinese knock off brand it is, 7" color screen, and i added a night vision camera to it that i originally had mounted inside against the back glass, i hated having it mounted there, because the sun would reflect off the back glass killing the picture, or at night the night mode lights would bounce off the glass and kill the picture also. I now have it mounted in the center of the spare on the back, and although i have not driven the jeep yet i am sure this will be a much better spot. I can have 2 cameras hooked up at once and switch them with a button on the unit. I am planning on having the other camera mounted out back of my off-road trailer so i don't loose my visibility when towing. as for the unit itself, it was supposed to mount to the rear view mirror, but i made a bracket down at the ashtray for this to clip into since i am tall and the whole purpose of this camera was so that i can remove the mirror and see to the right while driving. the picture is not great but it is at least 480p, at least thats what i think the box said. it also came with a backup warning system that i will probably install on the trailer as well.

With this unit i also can add more cameras to it so that i can have a camera on the front winch for watching my wraps, or the rear winch, possible some rock cameras..... in my opinion this was a great mod and don't cheap out on the crappy cheap cameras, i can go to any electronics shop and buy another night vision camera for $40!
