Hello all, after crawling through endless forums for guidance and then and dealing with some frustrating people on Craigslist I finally purchased my first XJ! A 1999 Cherokee Classic with 185,000 miles on it and a blown head gasket for $900.
So now what? I retire from the Navy this year after 30 years of service and our nest empty now and we are ready to get out there and explore. My plan is to get the XJ ready for trail use and build build my own off-road teardrop trailer.
Once the jeep is good to go then I'll start on the teardrop. I consider myself a pretty decent mechanic but my knowledge is a little limited when it comes to 4WD know how. I am still figuring out what direction to go with my XJ but this is the type of setup i am looking. http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/low-cog-suspension-setup-tricks-tips-revised-9-24-12-a-32980/
So here is the $900 XJ...

I figure a week or so to get it mechanically sound and road worthy again. But then I am at a little bit of a loss on what to start on next. I don't want to over build it but it has to strong and dependable enough for the trails. I don't think I am going to buy a "lift kit" but instead put together the various parts. I am thinking of just 2.5" or 3" and running either a 32" or 33" tire. Any thoughts?
Well, I'll just leave it there for now and see where this goes.
