My head has a small crack in it iam wondering if i can swap it with a pre 97 head and if so whick yr.

as far as i know you can swap it for any 4.0 HO head which is 1992 and newer.

Can you swap it. Yes. Should you, no. You live here in Cali too, and you will not pass emissions with the earlier head. It would be nice if you could because you would pick up some horsepower with it, but they redesigned the head to meet tighter emissions requirements.

Any recommendations on where I should take mine to get it rebuilt?

I'm not familiar with your area. Last time down was to pick up a vehicle to haul back. In and out so I'm nit sure. But if you find out who builds race engines, you cannot go wrong there
