my mechanical fan on the xj decided it was gonna some how rip off and chew up my safety shroud this morning, and take the overflow hose with it, only 1 slightly loose bolt on the shroud, any ideas how this happened?

Sounds like you could have bad motor mounts...

Check both motor mounts to make sure bolts are tight and look at the rubber parts as well they may be shot if so you can get them at any auto parts store.

Just to be sure check the fan for tightness and any movement.

Yeah I would def. say check the motor mounts to make sure they are serviceable as well as that your fan itself is tightly secured... I am actually trying to source a fan shroud for my 98 out of the JY since mine seemed to have lost the top surround when the radiator got replaced...

ok, so today i learned a lesson, grand cherokees must be junk, over 100 of them at a local junkyard, and only 12 xjs... but i did get my bigger alternator, but no fan shroud

I don't know how bad the shipping would be but try teamcherokee.com

It says it fits but not sure if they used the same shroud with old and new styles. But, here ya go. For some reason shows to be $8.??. Sounds too good to be true, but worth a shot. http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/AC/2222-04002481.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_content=AYY&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&utm_term=1987-2001+Jeep+Cherokee+Radiator+Fan+Shroud+Action+Cras h+CH3110104+87-01+Jeep+Radiator+Fan+Shroud+1999+2000&fp=pp&gbm=a&gclid=CILVsf3hsLYCFQ3qnAodWlEAtg

Duct tape is like The Force. It has a light side and a dark side and it binds the universe together! ;)
