I'm replacing all the driveline fluids tomorrow. I seem to have the capacities, but not the weights (don't have owners manual). We live in New England, so it gets chilly.

ANother issue I have is Jeep tells me to use ONLY ATF+4 in the auto tranny. All the auto stores computers recommend Dex/Merc. The XJ has 170,000 miles and will likely do no towing and minimal off road.

Please throw all advice and suggestions. I'm a sports car guy and new to this XJ. Heres what I think I know:

Differential fluid: 2 liters of 90w
X-fer case: 1 liter of tranny fluid (which is weird IMHO)
Tranny: 6 qts of Dex/Merc or ATF+4 (?)
Engine oil: 6 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic, probably 5w30

Anything I'm missing?

Thanks,
Butch

Based on your intended vehicle use ...

an 80/90 diff oil should be adequate.
If you have a LSD rear ... you need to use an additive ... or buy a diff oil with it already mixed in it.

Some factory info as a guide ...

LUBRICANT SPECIFICATIONS

A multi–purpose, hypoid gear lubricant which conforms to the following specifications should be used.

Mopart Hypoid Gear Lubricant conforms to all of these specifications.

The lubricant should have MIL–L–2105C and API GL 5 quality specifications.
Lubricant is a thermally stable SAE 80W–90 gear lubricant.

Lubricant for axles intended for heavy-duty or trailer tow use is SAE 75W–140SYNTHETIC gear lubricant.

CAUTION:

If axle is submerged in water, lubricant must be replaced immediately to avoid possible premature axle failure.

Probably be worthwhile considering 4x4 as "heavy-duty" .. ;);)

Tranny oil is an ongoing debate .... DexMerc was the original spec ... and for better or worse ... I just run Valvoline DX3.

I run dex/merc in my tranny and tcase. Works just fine.

I'm using atf+4 but with Lucas Oil Automatic Transmission Fluid Conditioner
add in it and in both trans. and t-case it helps keep the varnish from biulding up when the fluid gets very hot. And if you think the trans. puts out heat what do you think the t-case is doing with only 2 or 3 qt. and no cooler and setting behind the eng. and trans.. That is from my trans. guy and I have taken t-case with and without the additiv and it does make a differts.

This caught my interest.....I could not locate my 5-gallon bucket oil pump, so I about to buy another, since I have several vehicles needing fluid changes either as preventative maintenance or due to upgrades/rebuilds. Which means gallons of fluids.

Additives have come a long way, and synthetics even further.

So in addition to the AW4 and 231 to check/change in the XJ, I have a D30 and a 8.25 to flush/fill.

Add a T18 and a BW1356(some type of ATF in this one, I bet), a TTB D44, a 8.8, plus an SM465 and a NP205, with a 10bolt/14-bolt :smiley-scared002:

Are any fluid additives really worth it in transmissions, transfer cases, and axles? Excluding the factory additives for limited slips.

LMAO. Always learning. So, I look under the front end and what do I see? A front diff. Please, keep in mind, I've never had or dealt with 4x4. Closest is a AWD, in which the T-case IS the front diff. Ugh.

So, what fluid goes into the front diff? Same as the rear?

You might PM Mudderoy. He has a diagram somewhere on here with all the parts marked and named. It would help you know what we are talking about.

Front and rear Diff's take the same fluid, however do you have a "locker" or traction control devise in the rear? If so this will require a friction modification fluid. Jeep has there own but you can use different types if there available in your area. Friction modifiers keep the clutches in the "locker" lubricated, cool, and funtioning. If you don't know post the tag numbers off the rear end or fron end and I can tell you. Some will actually have two takes and one will state that you have a limited slip diff.
