Stick with the name brands, Miller or Hobart. Gas shield is best and don't get the smallest one you can find.

What he said^^^^^! When price shopping the "no name" brands look very appealing, don't shop price when looking at a welder. By a good one that is larger than your current needs and do it once, or, keep buying cheapies over and over again.

The quality of welds will be better too. Also make sure you have enough electricity to run it before you buy.

I prefer the 220v ones and currently use a Hobart Beta Mig and have had a couple of Millers as well. Lincoln used to be good but the new ones are made in Mexico and quality went way down. If you plan on getting a 120v version, the Hobart Handler line is great. The bigger ones will weld up to 1/4" plate with ease. And like stated above get one that uses gas, flux is a pain and more trouble than it's worth.

I've wanted the Hobart Handler 140 for a while. Just seems like a great welder for a beginner but allows you some room to grow once you get more experience. I don't have 220v so it would work for me. Can be done with gas or flux core. Welds mild steel up to 1/4", stainless, and aluminum. I love the versatility. Last i checked it was around $500, a good chunk of change but well worth it to be able to do so much.
