I was wondering what size tires would fit on a xj with a 4.5 inch lift with stock rims without rubbing.

Well, anything wider than about a 9.50" is going to hit the lower control arms during the tightest of turns. And for the body it really depends on your thoughts on trimming. Some have fit 35s but took several inches of fenders off. My jeep has 4.5" as well and without trimming my 31s would rub horribly at full compression while turning. No turning, about a hairs worth of clearance.

Buddy of mine has a 4.5 inch lift with 31s and only rub when compressed but not ln turns

You should be fine with 31s. I have run them with no lift.

The tire manufacture web sites have a spec sheet for each tire they offer. Each spec sheet gives detailed info including recommended wheel widths, speed rating, tread width,etc.. Once you pick the tire you like, go to the manufacturer website and check it out.
