Does a throttle ody spacer really help with mpg or power?

To be perfectly honest with you Tristan, PROBABLY not as much as one would hope. I do not have first hand experience with this, but I have heard from many, many XJ'ers that it really just gives you a throatier sound with no significant gain in mpg's or hp.

Here's a few links that delve into the subject a bit more.

I've been running a Poweraid spacer on my XJ for many many years now and it made no noticeable difference in fuel economy. The only difference I noticed after adding the spacer was a tad bit more power on the highway for passing, etc. Other than that all they really seem to do is make your intake whistle.

Unless you're doing an all-out engine power build, ie: headers, intake, cams, bored throttle body, then I personally wouldn't bother with just a spacer. You're better off to just spend that money on a tank of gas or put it towards off-road upgrades, ie: skids, lockers, winch.

The ported throttle is a better waste of money. Cold air intakes for most cars is a joke at best. I've dyno'd to see a difference on both my M3 which the motor was built by Metric Mechanics and a built B18C honda motor in a civic. The $300 + spent on them to make maybe 4hp is down right stupid. More air, more fuel, displacement makes power. So does forced induction. I would say work on other items to achieve your goals as to how you want your Jeep or any vehicle for that matter to be.
If you haven't already started building it. Maybe right out how you want your jeep to perform. What it's purpose would fit. The terrain, etc.

A throttle body spacer does better on a Carb/Throttle body injected engine where the spacer would a bit more area for the fuel and air to atomize. With a direct injected engine the spacer just gives the air farther to travel to get to the engine.
