Ok so i I bout a 1992 jeep cherokee laredo a few months ago and I was incredibly surprised to find a np249 from a grand cherokee in place of the stock 231. I just swapped it back to stock but he went one step further and switched all the connectors around instead of just rebolting everything. I found the tcase wiring harness plugged in right on top of the evaporator canister, its a 4 pin plug. My question is can I just pull the wires from another xj or how much of the wiring harness will I need to replace? I can post pics to make it clearer if need be....

Good question. What do you use to shift it?

When I swapped the 249 in my ZJ with a 231, opposite of yours, I swapped the speedo and wiring and everything bolted right up. Unless it's an older version that used a vac disco everything should just swap over.

Shift linkage is all stock and I just got that adjusted. So it shifts like a stock 231 xj would. I am just currently running with out the speedometer and the 4wheel light. I don't care at all bout the part time light however I would love to have my speedometer back. So basically all the mechanical parts fit right but none of the electronics fit.

When I swapped I swapped the sensors as well so the plugs would match up. Even the old style mechanical spedo can be pulled and the newer electrical swapped in, just have to swap the gear as well. Unless you have an older vac model 231 you should be fine.

Yeah so I hit the pick and pull yesterday and pulled the a speed sensor from a 249. I did the swap but here is the real kicker, The stupid speedometer aint working. :bang: I swapped out the the sensor but I have no idea if it works and I don't know if its the wires themselves that aren't working. Any ideas? Should I remove the tcase from the car then swap in the sensor to see if its in place or should I try another sensor first?

Not sure on the sensor, but the speedo cable units, which use the same gear set up rotate to accommodate the different tooth gears. Make sure the gears are touching.

How do I check if the gears are touching?

Could I just spin the gear on the end or the speed sensor with the car on and see if its working?

Yes. You should not be able to spin the gear. Also, some are marked. But as you look at it, you will notice the shaft is off set. Rotate it until it won't rotate any more, then back off a smidgen.

So uh... you mean I can take the sensor out of transfer case and be able to spin it with the car on and see if the speedometer reads? Or that I should rotate the gear until it wont spin?

Was just reading tis thread and came across this entry. Steve could you please explain to us what unit of measurement a smidgen is? Just so we can follow along. :)

Sorry man I just had too !!!

Hey if the needle of the speedometer is moving a lil slow how do I fix it?

Not sure what you mean by moving slow. Are you saying it registers a lower speed than you are traveling?

kuojo

Sorta... I mean if I stop the car it takes a few seconds to read zero, doesn't seem to have the same problem accelerating. So it doesn't slow in sync with actual speed

Not sure what to say to that. It is all electronic.

one solution you can opt for... is forget the wiring and just use a GPS speedometer app OR if you have a Garmin GPS they also show very accurate speeds, mine is and has been jacked up for about three years now and I just used my GPS ever since, ONLY issues I found were your odometer doesnt count and you don't have your cruise control nor the shift lights

Since fuel gauge doesn't quite work probably not a good idea :D I got it working well enough that it does what I want but thanks for the input
