View Full Version : Anyone replaced the engine rear oil seal?

Hi,

I'm looking for an article which describes how to replace the rear oil seal.
I already removed the oil pan, I don't want to remove the crank,
I know there is a way to do it without it...

I haven't done mine yet, but the link that Jim left ya, was the one I plan on using to do mine as I believe it is that time on mine when I get back stateside!!

Dirty, tedious, easy job.

X2 on leaving crank in ... but the stiffener hanginging below it needs to come out.

I used the factory service manual as the main reference guide ... and had a read of several, "how to" write ups by various posters - as extra info.

Theres a gazillion good threads accumulated over the years on various forums as extra reading too ... if wanted.

I had two hassles ...

Clearance getting the sump pan off and on ... and
ensuring the sump gasket didnt get caught & twisted at the bellhousing end ... when putting it all back together.


I also used genuine seals ... for a total of about $150 :shocker: ...
Have done a chris columbus since then tho ... and have discovered felpro gaskets and the pony express .... a much cheaper option than local, jeep stealership prices ... :D

On mine it was a very easy job. However, I did it at the same time that I was installing my lift, so the axle was out of the jeep.

Yup easy filthy dirty project. Stuff to do while you're in there, replace oil pump if your miles are getting up there. I went for the high volume upgrade.

Theres also talk of checking the bolts in the bellhousing but I didn't worry about it. Bolts in the dampening plate IIRC

It helps if you are able to remove the pan and let it drip for a half a day or overnight.

x2^^ even a couple of hours helps.

The thread jim linked is the one i used and it went without a hitch. Make sure ya have a torque wrench for re-install
