View Full Version : Bored at work= some crazy thoughts...
Ok so im sitting in my cubical thinking about suspensions...
runing a 4 link rear (or 5 link (with track bar)).. In stead of running coil overs why not run half leafs from the axle back to the shackle? I know on older vehicles they ran these... How do you think this would work? :rolleye0012:
OR run half leafs from center of axle upside down so that they arch reverse of normal and run up to the frame rails.... hmm

If I was goning to that much work I would go 4 link with coils on the rear. I hate to say this but my TJ has a 4 link with coils and it rides a lot better than the XJ

What you are describing is a quarter elliptic suspension. They work well and flex well, but do not have the same characteristics of a coil.

And from what i've heard they're harder to set up correctly than coil/coilover.
oh... and here i thought i was being creative and thinking of new things... damn.... Im not gonna attempt it just wanted others input on it lol

Well, i have never seen it done on a XJ. So it would definitely be original. Here's an example of a quarter elliptical suspension.

This is the rig I always think of when I think of quarter elliptical suspension.
This is Shannon Campbell's very early rig. Probably one of the first tube buggies. He won the 1996 TTC (Top Truck Challenge) with it. He is pretty well known in the world of Rock Crawling.
