View Full Version : Oil leak from exhaust manifold?

I've had a terrible oil leak for a while now ( pretty much everything under the jeep from engine block to front differential is lined with a layer of oil new or old) but recently within past few months I have been smelling burning oil stronger than usual and even some smoke when I park. So while changing oil today I was looking around and I noticed I have oil coming out of the exhaust manifold?? Wtf moment. Is not where it meets the block but at the bottom of the first tube (one closer to front of block) where it meets the second part of that tube that eventually connects to the single pipe. Any ideas or theories here?

Do you see any cracks there or is is possibly running down to that point?

No cracks, nothing running down to that point. It's coming out of where the two parts meet. I'd take a pic but I have a 2g flip phone. Maybe I can find a camera

well since the exhaust and the intake are intertwined it could be that you have a pretty large leak on the intake side... either way if you have a leak at that area.its definitely time to start replacing gaskets!... please help us out and get in there with a camera with a flash, that will help us understand better and get you a better diagnosis

I would think its a leaking valve cover gasket. There is no oil running through your exhaust manifold unless your engine is VERY worn out. And if it was that worn out it would be smoking out the tailpipe like crazy while running.

I was in agreement with jim, I think the oil is coming from above the manifolds... but it seems as though your now have so much of a leak that is actually dripping back down onto the exhaust

Agreed I'll have to get a camera in there tomorrow and show you guys what I'm talking about.

Just be real careful buddy... we'd hate for that thing to catch fire. Oil and exhaust is a baaad combo. Stay safe, man.

well i would, but apparently photobucket site is having technical problems and members are unable to login. or thats what I got.:bang:. I will find another way. I really want to find this leak and fix it.

Here's what I suggest. Retorque all of your valve cover bolts/studs 'cause I'd be willing to bet that at least one has worked itself loose and is causing the oil leak. Then clean the engine well with some degreaser so that you remove all oil deposits, and run the engine as normal looking for any new oil leak. If my hunch is correct, your oil leak will either diminish or disappear altogether.

yea I am going to for sure just finally got some free time today. I was actually thinking of going somewhere and getting all major gaskets replaced as well. how much you think that would run?

right where the leaks looks like it is starting is where smoke coming from. between the lip of the circle and the down pipe

The circle is where some more smoke was coming from farther down the exhuast

It looks like you have two oil leaks. There's plenty of oil "sweat" on the top of the intake manifold where it meets the head so that suggests a leaking valve cover gasket. There's also a lot of oil "sweat" around the oil filter area which suggests that the oil filter adapter o-rings have perished.
Luckily for you, both are cheap easy fixes and while you're at it, ditch that Fram oil filter and replace it with a quality unit such as Mopar or Wix.
It also seems that you might have a small oil leak from the front of the oil pan or front crank seal, and a further small leak from the rear main crank seal. The reason could be crankcase pressurization due to clogged valve cover CCV grommets so since you're going to remove the valve cover to replace the gasket anyway, you might as well remove the grommets and clean them thoroughly. Better still if you can blow some compressed air through them to make sure they're clear.

yea been meaning to rid the fram filter. and the valve cover and oil filter was what i was thinking as well, but to be honest, i dont know mch about crank seals or crankcase pressurization. or clogged valve cover ccv grommets. I was actually gona take it somewhere and say "here, fix this." are they an easy fix as well? any threads on here that might help me familiarize myself with these? or i could always google it . . .

Probably time for a new oil sending unit. I need to do mine because it sits close to zero, then moves around when it wants to.
