Nate, an XJ is still a good rig to buy at that milage. They typically will go for 300K if well maintained

AW4 is a 225k to 300k though isn't it?

It looks nice, but I feel the price is a bit high. If it were me I would tell him to keep his kickin stereo system. I find it funny that he calls the 31" tires GIANT.

$2400, seems to need some work... It's not "mechanically" sound. It's not in perfect condition at all.

I have over $5000 into mine and I wouldn't be able to get that...

This is kbb price for that car with everything he listed in add. Good and bad. If you go look at it, and it is on the bottom end, offer him $2300. Dents dings scratches, mechanical work, won't pass emmisions as is...

whats better in the xj Cherokees automatic or standard ?

Mudderoy

whats better in the xj Cherokees automatic or standard ?

Standard is better for gas mileage and I believe the transmission lasts longer and is overall more preferable than a automatic, however the AW4 automatic do last much longer than most automatic transmissions, at least the ones I've had and many people that climb rocks feel automatic transmissions are the only way to go.

If I had of had a choice when we purchased our 1998 XJ new I would have got a standard.

EekGirl96
08-16-2012, 12:40 PM
How much are you wanting to spend? There are plenty of XJs in AZ that need new homes(I live in AZ too). Are you looking for an already built one or one you can build up?

denverd1
08-16-2012, 12:42 PM
I can see the clutch getting hot while crawling a standard; heat is bad for trannys. However, I grew up with a standard in our jeep and kind of miss sometimes.

Xj Nate
08-16-2012, 12:46 PM
i have 5k to spend kinda want one already built up but the cheapest i get it the more i can put into it. kinda want automatic too.

EekGirl96
08-16-2012, 12:50 PM
You have plenty to spend for a good XJ, just going to have to be patient and wait for the perfect one(no such thing as a perfect Cherokee, they all have their flaws lol)

Ive seen a couple on the locals that seem to be worth looking at...I'll try to find them

whats better in the xj Cherokees automatic or standard ?

Ive always preferred manuals in all my vehicles over the years ... but Im impressed with the XJs AW4 auto in offroad situations.

.... and I figgered if its good enough for use in volvos and toyotas - it cant be too bad a box .. :D

It does need a good aftermarket oil cooler tho.

nateyz2000

whats better in the xj Cherokees automatic or standard ?

I found a guy in chandler selling a really clean xj, he is asking $7000, but offer him $3700 lol

Here is another one what do u guys think it has 150k miles on it
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/3174138711.html

let me know what u guys would pay for it. what i should pay for it

denverd1
08-16-2012, 05:32 PM
damn that ones clean. lifted with decent tires so you don't have to worry about that. fenders are trimmed. paint looks great. i'd pay $3500 for it. not sure if he'll come down that much but its ready to go

denverd1
08-16-2012, 05:34 PM
for reference, the tires were bald on mine when I bought it and that set me back about 900. lifts start around 500 and go up so keep in mind what you would've spent on those things. And you can finance those costs if you're going that route since they're already on it.

XJ4IV
08-16-2012, 05:57 PM
first off the one pictured is NOT a 97! that front clip went to 96! and I wouldnt pay more than 3800 for a true 97!... upon further inspection he has either done a front clip swap BACK to the old design cause it looks like it has later model mirrors and door handles as well as I can KINDA see inside and it seems to have later model dash ask him for interior pics as well! but again 3800 cash money DEFINITELY will talk to him!

Brasscatz
08-16-2012, 06:39 PM
Definitely an older model header panel swap. I think Scott is right about the mirrors and such, as well as the front windows.

Should we be concerned that he didn't post mileage on it? You'll have to ask him about more detailed information like what all he's replaced, any known issues, etc. Also, aren't all 2-door models 5-speeds? $5,000 is pretty high in my opinion. He did state that he would hate to see it go, so that's probably driving his price up. Depending on further information that you can find out, $2,500 - $3,500 is where I'd be. Very nice looking Jeep though!

XJ Wheeler
08-16-2012, 07:27 PM
What i wonder about is he lists "straight frame". Who puts that in an add for a nice looking vehicle. With that older clip i bet its been wrecked.

XJ4IV
08-16-2012, 08:26 PM
I mean who would got through the intense work of going to the OLD front clip??? unless he did wreck the front a little bit, but that mod requires new fenders and front clip and NEW headlights... its a BUNCH of work!... trust me I did it last year!

Body's kinda rough but the underpinnings sound great. Low miles too. Since its an SE it probably won't have the power options, if that's important to you.

Personally, the body's too rough for that amount of $.

Xj Nate
08-17-2012, 12:03 AM
the only damage is on the front fender and isn't to bad but its from a friend i know and he wouldn't screw me so the motors in awesome condition. and all that but is it worth it i think its awesome

The things i saw that my conclusion came from-

cracked header panel

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/xjtalk/IMG_0020-1.jpg

Wavy rear door and quarter panels

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/xjtalk/IMG_9982-1.jpg

Dented rocker

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/xjtalk/IMG_6040-1.jpg

Lots of those classic Arizona pinstripes

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/xjtalk/IMG_9968-1.jpg

Not to be discouraging, i've just learnt to look at all that beforehand.:D

Still seems too much to me, but everything in your area seems high. Hell mine is forsale for much cheaper. Mine is a 92 with new paint, new interior, 6.5" lift on 33's. And 130k. Id sell mine for 3500. I know its too far for you, but maybe you'll find somebody crazy like me up there...

bigjim350

I know your trying to find one that is already built. I like to buy them stock, then build them myself so I know its done right. If its pre-built you will not know what the previous owner did incorrectly. Like my jeep, it was bought from the original owner and was 100% stock and got most of its 120k being pulled behind a RV, also I only paid 1200 for it

Shoot, buy jims and have it SHIPPED and STILL come out spending 5000, your not gonna find another jeep like jims........ LOL just kidding jim jims was a very capable jeep before he did the renovation on it! and NOW it even looks pretty... I mean handsome!
Id look into shippers for that route in alllll honesty! we can all vouche for his mechanical experience and know that it is a great pre-owned jeep to buy!
I'll put it this way if I were buying a jeep and I KNEW jim prior to needing the jeep I wouldnt hesitate to buy this one!

After the Mustang died, we needed a vehicle A.S.A.P. I found a 99 XJ in our price range on craig's list, from a small dealer. Drove to look at it, test drove it and bought it. The paint is a little rough, but it drove very well. Still does. :D

straightsixjeep

The first dozen I looked at didnt have floors, serious rust issues underneath, they were asking to much $, dents and dings,.... If you want to do some work you can pick up whatever cherokee you can find, however I wanted to find the cleanest one I could. You have to be on craigslist like a hawk, right when one is posted you must contact the owner. 20 minutes after this guy posted the one I bought, I had called to come take a look. It took 2 hours to haggle with him...but overall It came out to be a good jeep. Built not bought guys. The first one I looked at was for $3400, had a rustys 6in I believe, mt 33s on rubicon wheels, overall was a clean rig. Upon closer inspection it had the rear quarter panel cut out, big dent on the rain gutter/roof from a TREE falling on it.... Sit tight and get used to searching if you want to find the XJ right for you.

The one in back with the hose clamp on it is the oil filler cap. (or 710 cap depending how you look at it :D) The one with the elbow on it in front is supposed to be connected to the air cleaner box. It's for your pcv valve

seems ok on front end, as suggested Josh, pull up breather hose somewhere higher in engine bay.

can you see the LCA? if tire rubbing there you will find mirror finish on LCA in middle outer side. Mine is rubbing at full steer with 31x10.5 and stock wheel

Great pics of the engine bay. Im looking to replace the rock hard grommets for the air hose and the ccv line on the valve cover. Do the plastic fittings that sit in the grommet (that the hose attaches to) just pop out? I dont want to break them trying to replace the grommets?

Nate, one thing that would help us is filling out your vehicle information in the User CP. But if you are experiencing rubbing at full turn, most of us do if we have taller than stock tires. Just look for the rub marks on the lower control arm.

yep, ziptie that breather hose up higher. Mines close to the brake booster, but anywhere up high in the eng bay works.
