Finally getting to the worn out steering gear. Been squirting ps fluid all over the place since I bought her. Sourced a rebuilt unit through Napa for $138. Got air box out of the way, intermediate shaft off. Just can't get those lines off. Got std and metric wrenches. Nothing fits. Maybe I misplaced my 18mm but nothing I've got fits it!!
Anybody got a clue on getting the lines off the unit?

Ugh, i just did this a while back. I wish i could remember the size, it might very well be the 18mm. I did get a new set of flare nut wrenches that helped a lot.

Thx gents. Can I reuse the flare nuts and lines? or should I replace the lines and nuts while i'm in there?

Yes they are reusable unless the lines are rusted so bad you think they might spring a leak

Well I couldn't find a flare nut wrench in 18mm. All the sets at O'Reilly go up to 17mm. Found combo wrench and can of PB Blaster. Hopefully I can break them loose.

Steve, thanks for confirming the size.

I have metric tubing wrenches too, but they skip 18mm

I bought 19, 20, and 21mm. They were really expensive at Sears, but much less at Lowes. I didn't price them at Home Depot.

Sears was the only place i could find em at on short notice, and couldn't have done it without them. I tried using open ended ones only to start rounding the nuts. If you want to get them from Sears go to their website and check out the price online, i got them $10 cheaper that way and picked em up in store minutes later.

And since yours look fairly rusty and their relatively inexpensive i would go ahead and change out the hoses.

Common problem down here too ...

Need to buy em individually as most kits dont have em.

16, 18, and a few others ... are weird sizes - that for the most part - seem to be a "jeep thing" ... :D

more tools... 33mm for the pitman arm.

I'm glad snap-on doesn't come by house or this would get expensive fast.

Jake, the majority of that is red mud. They're pretty dirty from the PS fluid leak. I'll clean them up and see how they look.

31mm for the wheel bearing nut, I think.

wheel bearing nut? this another example of odd sizes on our jeeps, right?

I just replaced a PS pump and I replaced both lines I would recommend it since you'll have em off anyhow also I went with a inline filter I also flushed the system before buttoning it back up I ran 2 qt's through before installing the filter and reconnecting the lines may be overkill but couldn't hurt.

If you're talking the power steering lines, I replaced both from Rock Auto for under $40 with shipping.

I did mine last year. Be beautiful part is that I used a pair of plyers to crush the hard lines and broke them off above the fitting. I then could use a deep well socket on the fittings to get them off.

well since I'm on day 3 of PB Blaster and gear puller on the pitman arm, looks like I'll have time to order some new lines.

Got new lines and finally ready to put this back together. Waiting on pitman arm to show up.

Jake, apparently that was rust you were seeing! So much so that I can't separate the hard line from the compression coupler that connect the hard line and the pump on high pressure line. It also appears that this little part is IMPOSSIBLE to find! Even from dealership, it comes on a new pump with a big price tag. Found a JY that has a '97 so hopefully tomorrow I can run out there and snag it. Just crossing my fingers that the PS stuff is all there.

I got a set of SAE & Metric line wrenches at HF for next to nothing. For the number of times I'm probably ever going to use them they were a good deal. IIRC, 18 came with it.

Are you speaking of the nut where the pressure hose hooks up to the pump? I had to break both ends off of my pressure hose to get it off.

I used a pair of pliers and broke the metal lines above the fittings and put deep well socket on them. They came out like butter.

yep, the smaller fitting in both of your pics. I cut my line too. I don't have a vise at the house or I'd likely have it separated by now. Going to a buddy's shop today to throw it in a vise and put a wrench on it, then JY if I can't get it done there.

Found it!! Didn't have my deep sockets.:banghead:.

Parts are going on. All lines are done.

:hmmmm2:Got the intermediate shaft on. Pitman arm finally showed up so I'll put that on tonite.

Twisted my T55 trying to get that retarded oil filter adapter off. Also got my winch mounted. If anyone ever says "hey come over and help me put my winch on!" you better RUN the other way like pack of tracker jackers just found your ass. maybe thats why Wayne keeps midgets around? :hmmmm2:
