View Full Version : Trans won't shift from 1st!!

Yesterday I was out on the trails. They are very flooded and sandy (south Florida). Not much mud in the summer. I drove home fine. Trans shifted like it should. Sprayed her off real quick and parked her in the driveway to fully clean her in the morning. This morning I go to get beer to work on my fenders and the beast won't shift from 1st. It's a 96 auto. What could be wrong that would happen over night with it being off? Checked the fluid it's pink and filled.

Thanks in advance.

If its pink its got water in it trans fluid is red or dark colored reddish brown if it's never been serviced.

Well it's dark pink. I'm gonna flush it regardless and make sure my breather is up high. Would a little bit of water in the fluid make it not shift right though?

Can you shift it manually? I'm wondering if it's the transmission control module.

It shifts fine into reverse then back into drive, 2, and 3 but when I put it in drive it won't shift through the gears. Same thing in 4hi and 4lo won't shift into another gear. Where is the trans control module located?

I'm flushing it this Monday when I have time and my intake is high enough. It's not stock. Water doesn't touch the intake obviously it did the tranny though.

I just went out to try and start it and it took me 5 minutes to even start it now and it dies if I rev it at all and let go. Does that mean distributor is wet?

I think its more likely the tcu got wet. Mine has done the same thing several times when I got to deep. However after mine dries out it always works again. Your tcu is located behind the panel of the dash below the glove box. A little water in the fluid wouldn't likely give you those symptoms, alot of water would though

Oh hell no. It's still much more redish than that and fully transparent. There's no cloudiness to it at all. I'm going to pull the distributor tomorrow. Give it a good clean and seal it up with silicone and a surgeons glove. Hopefully all will be well by tomorrow. Crossing the fingers. Thanks guys.

Like I stated above the fluid is still fully transparent and reddish so I'm thinking/hoping it's the tcu as well.

With your experiences with this, how long did it usually take to dry out? Because it drove fine on the way home from the trails, sat overnight then didn't work in the morning. It's sat all day today and will sit tomorrow while I mess with the distributor.

Get at it from inside the cab, right below my glove box correct? Looks like tomorrows goal will be getting the jeep running again. Gonna have to stuff a case a beer in a backpack on my bike for this..

Well it took me like 5 minutes of cranking on and off to start it earlier today then I got it started and it would idle but if I revved it to say 2k and let all the way off it would stall and it sounded real rough.

I will for sure check that out as well. Because if it can cause those symptoms it'd make sense. It was stalling through water crossing the same day as stated in my other post.

Any way I can test it, short of replacing it?

Hey guys, IIRC the renix TPS is the one you calibrate. The 96 is OBDII and cannot be adjusted. However, check the plug and stuff like that. If you want to do something more to waterproof, use some dielectric grease on those connections to waterproof them.

Don't buy parts from AutoZone. If you can get the part from a Chrysler dealer, if you can't (cost) get it from another parts place.
