I inherited a 98 Cherokee Sport 4.0l Auto 2WD when my friend passed and have had a very enjoyable time getting from 109K miles to 139k miles. I'm old school shade tree mechanic from 1960-61 auto shop. Recently had a situation where my alternator light came on and subsequently would not turn over or start. I replaced the alternator and checked and cleaned all my wires that were removed, replaced the positive battery cable and was amazed that nothing had changed. Still wouldn't turn over and start. Befuddled by the computerization of the systems I downloaded a shop service manual and studied the contents reverently. Then, after much head scratching http://www.xjtalk.com/images/smilies/out.gif and such, I came here to get some advice from your forums. After digesting much of the info on my situation and replacing two relays in the PCM, I purchased a Code Reader and was heartened to see the CPS and the relays and two fuses I replaced, were the culprit as suggested in your forum. Now it starts and am just awaiting receipt of a new Idle Air Controller which will cure my "no idle" situation (hopefully).
My deepest thanks for all your contributors for getting me back on the road...http://www.xjtalk.com/images/smilies/love0007.gif http://www.xjtalk.com/images/smilies/driving.gif

That's great. Really sorry to hear about your friend, but it looks like both of you get the experience the Cherokee which I think is a good thing.

Very nice of you to take the time not only to thank us, but to give us an update on the solution to your issues.

Thx Cantab27....Good to hear from a NZ Kiwi....visited Christchurch and other NZ towns while on an extended cruise on a big gray yacht (US Navy) in the 60's. God bless the internet and all the XJTALK contributors.

Thx for the response....kept me out of the local "mechanics" grip while getting a real deep experience of how to approach a system failure. Being a computer geek I was really ready to use logic and analysis to attack my problem while saving oodles of cash. I'll be here at XJTALK til she dies and is no longer in need of life-support.

You don't have to be a "real off-roader" to hang with us. I have been here for 3yrs and I am still stock, they haven't kicked me out yet.

That is a good looking 2 door you have.

Even the 2WD cherokee's are very capable! If you put a selectable locker in the rear, destinations would be unlimited! Glad you enjoy the Jeep!

Update....after ordering a new idle air controller (IAC) I was really anxious to see my high idle condition; after replacing the CPS, go away. Unfortunately, the replacement's shaft/pintle guide was about 3/8" shorter then the grubby little thing I had finally removed after acquiring long TORX allens. So, I cleaned up my old one, re-installed it after more thorough cleaning of the idle air passages and VOILA!!! she started on the first spin, idled like a champ and took her straight to the car wash to remove the two months worth of schmutz she had acquired while I got up the stones to deprive my local mechanics of the $$$$ and get the knowledge and assistance to DIM (do it myself).
I now figure I have an AAS degree in Jeepology and hope I don't have to get a BS degree.
So, I guess the moral of the story is "hang on to the old part" and be thankful for all the info available on this forum. file:///C:/Users/CANDORICH/Desktop/JEEP/JEEP%20DOCUMENTS/JEEP%20IAC%20001.JPG

My buddy had a 98 that I tried replacing the IAC valve on and it was smaller too. He ordered it from RockAuto.com and I guess there were more than one option. I tried cleaning up the old one and it was better, but after him watching me replace it, he felt comfortable enough doing it himself once he got the right part.

I tried to attach a comparison photo, but I guess I have a little more to learn about the forum. Thanks for your feedback. I guess mail-order via internet is WYSIWIG. I just hope my supplier (jeep4x4center.com) will refund my money or send me the right part. Thanks to this forum I found moparpartsoverstock.com which may prove to be a better supplier. but their shipping charges are $$$$. All that's left (?) is to clean the NSS to get rid of the P0700 & P0705 codes and my CEL can take a vacation. Thanks for the feedback.
