Hello I am new to jeeps and i am the proud new owner of a 88' XJ 4wd now i didnt get much backround other than a 4.0 was put in it but the selector for 4wd says 2wd, 4 part time, four full time, Neutral, and 4lo but the thing is there are only four clicks to it (so no four full time) i dont know if the transfer case was changed at all any ideas :bang:

There is a little round tag on the back of the tcase. It will have the number of the case and gear ratio in it. Read us the numbers and we can tell you what you have for sure.

First thing is that you do not have the right selector for your tcase. The selector you have is for the 242 tcase. So somewhere it has been changed. I would suggest you get the proper selector. And as for the rear axle you probably have the D35, but look at the diff cover and compare to these.

You need the select trac linkage. 2WD, 4WD, N, 4Lo

well it s a 231 t case but it shifter says 2hi 4pt 4ft n 4lo but i have only 2hi second click is i dont know third click is neutral (when engaged if jeep is in gear it does nothing and 4lo
wouldnt that be the command track the only diffrence i see between the two is there is no 4ft

In theory. But you should have the proper linkage so you won't be half in or out of a gear.

well i think it is the right linkage cause 4lo definitely works and it matches up as does the neutral selection its just the housing is different (the pictures) I looked up the VIN and it said it was a 2.5 with a automatic 4 speed and whats in it now is a 4.0 with a 5 speed manual transmission

The way it should be is 2hi,4hi,neutral,4low that's the way my 90,94,&00 xjs are with the 231

and thats where it differs i have and extra selection on the housing the housing shows 5 selections but when you shift it there is only four i am probably just black out the extra selection

IMO the 231 is better, the d30 front is a decent axle up to 33s running stock stuff, the d35 is ok up to 31s and mild trail riding, mud, snow wheeling, IMO find a Chy 8.25 if you plan on putting big tires on and going rock crawling or more than mild trails.

mate wheel it ..if it brakes replace with stronger gear......lotta what ifs when it comes to diffs....i look at it like this when i had the xj on 33s running d30 d35..if they snap cheap to replace...never broke em.......why spend the money now....get some other bits...recovery gear, armor , winch..etc etc..best wheel it see what i tand you can do and mod from there..

I have to agree with that.
