Can it be done in the rear? Drums are a pain in the butt to repair so can you convert?

I have the 8.25 29 spline diff. I still need to do the ebrake setup and order the small rubber end lines.

I have no idea what I have on the rear of my Jeep. Guessing a 44. Can you do this with a Dana setup?

You can do it with any Cherokee axle. A 2001 did not come with a 44. You have a D35 or Chrysler 8.25

Its a easy swap I just done mine a month ago just get the backing plates, rotors, calipers, brake hoses, and e brake cables from a 96 to 98 Zj grand Cherokee. The backing plates you have to cut a 1/8th inch out of the center to slide over the chy 8.25 axle and it slides right on and bolts up, just make sure you mark left and right on the plates and calipers before you pull them off the donor. I'd its the d35 its a direct bolt on, also if your running aluminum wheels you will need the lug nut studs from the Zj also. May need the proportion valve too if you have ABS, my 94 I didn't and it stops perfect without locking the tires up.

How do you tell the difference?

You were right. D30 Front and 35 in the rear. What makes the 44 so special?

Stronger housing, ring gear, larger axles and wonderful aftermarket goodies.

So 44's are the way to go front and back? I am not a rock crawler nor a big 4x4er. So could I get by with what I have? I plan to lift the Jeep but I dont plan to go extreme.

Mine came with Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25. The C8.25 is just about as strong as the Dana 44 so I'm sticking with it. Personally I don't trust the Dana 35 so I would find a Chrysler 8.25 for about $125 and swap it then you won't have to worry about it. I've been told that it can handle 35" tires locked axles. Oh if you get a 97+ C8.25 it will be 29 splines. The Dana 44 is 31 splines.

If the Dana 30 is a low pinion then you might have problems with vibrations depending on how high you lift it (if at all). A high pinion Dana 30 is preferred for lifted Jeep XJ's. Now if you could get a front Dana 44 that would be a nice upgrade.

Are 44 expensive upgrades? Do they bolt right up? Do you have to modify the drive shaft or anything like that at all?

If you have a 8.25 the liberty rear disc will bolt right on if you can find the parts used

I've never done it. If you get a Dana 44 that was made for a XJ then it should be a direct bolt in. I'm not sure about the drive shaft length though. I suspect it is the same distance to the transfer case to the diff, or close enough it doesn't matter.

The steerable Dana 44 seem to be pretty rare, at least around here.

To answer your questions, yes they bolt right up if you get one out of an XJ. But yes you can get by with what you have if you don't go extreme. I have a D35 with a locker and wheel the rocks. However I take it easy and mine does not have C clips, the No 1 failure in them. Yes you can run a 44 front. But none of them bolt right in. Fabrication skills are required.

My discs came from a 2004 LJ. They bolted right up. The only modification required was longer e-brake cables.

But finding the donor LJ might be a problem.
