So I have a slightly awkward request... I bought this jeep about a month ago and noticed a slipping issue. I start investigating what could be the issue of the slipping and find something interesting... somehow or another my t-case got switched to a NP249. Now I don't know if this is causing the problem but I don't care. At some point I will switch it back to a 231 anyway. I am just curious bout what problems I may run into trying to switch the t-case back. I dont know for sure it was a 231 or 242 that was stock but how would I go trying to swap this for a 231?

What kind of jeep you have? I've only seen the 249 in a v8 wj all time 4x4.

It will just bolt right in. Not sure if the driveshafts will need to be swapped or not.

Its a 92 jeep Cherokee Laredo. I think it came stock with a 231. I think the guy who had it before swapped it with a 249. So a stock 231 should just bolt right in? No fancy adaptors or anything else to adjust? Would the 249 have any mods I would have to undo to make the 231 fit?

should be a pretty direct swap, like jim said...you might need new drive shafts. the 249 is full time 4X4. the 231 is part time. look at the console and see if the po changed out the indicator strip, that will tell you what it had to start with if it wasn't swapped out to match the 249.

Nick don't forget we have a way (if the member fills it out) to see the specifics about their vehicle.

This shows their first name location but it also shows the various bits of information about their primary vehicle.

You'd have to look to be sure, but unless the transmission was changed in some way the NP231 or NP242 should be a direct bolt in. No telling what had to be done to get the NP249 in there, perhaps nothing more than swapping. It will be interesting finding out the answer though.

Ty for your help :D:D hopefully the swap should just go smoothly and fix the tyranny issue I am having. Its a 231 for sure because the shift pattern is definitely a 231. Guy didn't even change the old shift pattern. I will keep ya posted with how this job will go once I can find a 231 for cheap :D:D

The 249 is the Quadra-trac full time t-case from the grand cherokee only. Its a common swap for grands to be converted to a 231. Don't know all the technical stuff on the swap though. I do know the viscous coupler in the 249 is major $ to replace.

Sorry I haven't answered the post in awhile. I just swapped out the 249 for a stock 231. The swap went well taking quite a bit of time. However it looks like the guy changed the entire wiring harness instead of taking the much simpler route of just rebolting the sensors :headshake: ugh... I didn't have to change anything mechanical though so thank you guys for all your help
