I did a search and found converting from auto windows to manual.

What about the tranny? Worth the headache?

It can be done of course, but you need a donor vehicle for it.

Am thinking of doing the same thing on mine. All bolt on, no fab required. All you need is: Tranny, bell housing, pedal assembly, clutch master cyl, clutch kit, flywheel, crossmember, shifter, and driveshafts. Sounds like alot, but most can be gotten at a junkyard fairly cheap.

Could the donor be a wrangler?

You get more control with a stick!

No, the tcase is clocked differently on a Wrangler. So the rear housing on the tranny would be off.

So you could use a wrangler if you found a T case for a Cherokee. Does any aftermarket companies make this one part?

Not completely sure on that

Try Advanced Adapters http://www.advanceadapters.com/ or JB Conversions http://www.jbconversions.com/. Between these two companies, if the adapter is not available, then no one makes it.

You might think its a little expensive, but buy quality and cry once or buy cheap and cry everyday thereafter.

Oh yeah, and a stick is the way to go. I have an auto in my XJ because I need it. But my prior TJ and Toyota's all had sticks. If I had my way the XJ would also have a stick. With that said, stick vs auto is a personal preference. Which is better can be argued until the cows come home.

I've been wheelin for over 20 years trust me you have way more control with an auto. I've had both.

My TJ had a 5 speed in it now it has an auto. going up a class 4-5 trail when the standerds stall or start smoking the clutch I go right around them. My son got a 5 speed in his XJ and we are going to put an auto in it because he is tired of me smoking him on the trails.

So you got a tranny to donate then:D:D

Many years ago I smoked a new clutch. It was this experience that taught me to keep my left foot on the floorboard, not the clutch pedal. The Jeep will walk all over obstacles if the driver lets it. Start off, no problem. First gear, low range, just hit the starter and the Jeep goes. No clutch required. Stalled in water, no problem. Just bump the starter with the Jeep in first gear, low range. Presto, out of the water, no clutch required. Try either one of the above moves with an auto. Also, many auto drivers found their tranny's do not like water. Some to the point their rig would not move after being submerged. My lowly manual only required a fluid change after I got home.

My 4 wheeling involved a lot of rocks and deep water. Yes, standard factory gearing did not cut it in the rocks. The cure was to put deeper gearing in the axles. Then we found Klune-V boxes. Now we could drive on the road and have low gearing.

I have owned a 4x4 since 1978. All except my present XJ were sticks. Yes, autos have their place. People can argue both the virtues and shortcomings of either tranny all day long. I suggest going with friends and drive both types. Get the one you like.

Besides, it is cool to get in a rig with 3 or more sticks in the floor board.
Now, let the flaming begin muahaha

Anybody can wheel a auto. Takes skill to do it with a stick ;)

I can agree with that Jim. But I think it depends on the type of wheeling you do. If you are in the rocks, autos rule. But in mud, stick rules. Also driving on snow and ice.

skill comes into it when going down steep slippery mudding hills.......has caught many out in a auto.......

Anyone can smash a pedal and trail. Same thing with racing, anyone can pedal mash and let their car do their work.:driving:

I had something similar version in a ratchet shifter for my 4L60E. I took it out because going from 1st to reverse was a real pain in the :ass:

The P.O. had converted My XJ to stick. He bought an NV3550 from Atlas and the garage that did the install bought the clutch pedal from the junk yard. They did not use a clutch switch and epoxied the neutral safety switch from the auto trans. so it would not move from the park position. Then stuffed it under the hood.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll283/cainc_bucket/Junk/Object2.jpg

This worked but the cruise control didn't. I installed a clutch sw. and spliced it into the wires for the neutral safety sw. Then got rid of the neutral safety sw.
Hope this helps some.

Kinda proved my point. I like a challenge when I tail. I also like having the control of which gear I want to be in while going down hill. I hate our tranny, seems like it only goes OD, 3rd, 1st. I can never get 2nd.
