I just bought a 98 xj with 28,000 miles on it . It's practicly new . I'm thinkin' 6 1/2 RC longarm with the shackle relocators & whatever it takes up front to level it . I would like to run 35s but still want it to be a daily driver . I need help with the gearing . I've always had CJs & Wranglers with a standard . The XJ is a 4.0 auto . I'm not much of a mudder , more of a crawler but it has to be able to go down the hiway . Probably go with a Detroit in the front & 8.8 limited slip in the rear just because of the hiway driving but I don't have any idea where to start on the gears . ALL input is welcome .
Thanks ,
BHK Okie

4.56 for slightly lower gearing that stock, or 4.88's.

Congrats on the low mileage score, that low is really hard to find. If it wasn't for age it would still be covered under the factory warranty. lol

Also, welcome to xjtalk Terry.

Welcome to xjtalk

If he goes to a 4.88 in the front won't he want to replace the D30 due to the the pinion gear size being more prone to breakage or was that with 5.13 and lower?

4:88 is as low as ya can go in the 30 without replacing the carrier . I've got 4:88s in my Wrangler with a 4 banger . I keep thinkin' when it explodes I'll upgrade but I can't tear it up . All my buddies have 305s & 350s with bigger axles and they're ALWAYS breakin' stuff . I can go anywhere they do with less throttle and the only thing I've ever broke is leaf springs . I just didn't know how much power the 4.0 would have driving 65 - 70 on the hiway and of course the XJ is heavier - especially after winch & bumper , rear tire carrier bumper , rock rails ( all AJ's , building now )

I thought the carrier break was 3.73(?) Is there another break? I had to change carriers when I went from 3.55 to 4.56.

I run 4:88's in a D30 with 35's and my transmission shifts like stock and my speedometer is pretty accurate.

No other break Tony. All the spicer diffs have only two carriers
