Hello all,

Last week I picked up a 1997 XJ Country with 114300 miles. No rust other than the tow hitch. The engine sounds strong with a really slow leak at the rear main. Just added new champion copper plugs, new dynomax exhaust and rampage headlights with upgraded wire harness. New radio this week. Waiting till next pay check to get Cap, rotor and wires. Hope to have a fun time with the Jeep and the community.

With only 114k miles on the odometer, your engine's still a baby and only 1/3 of the way through its lifespan. There are so many good things about the XJ (strong performance, fun to drive, reliable, easy to fix, readily available parts) that it would be hard not to love it. That's why I still have mine after 17 years of ownership.
The rear main crank bearing seal can leak slowly for years and not cause any problem so I wouldn't worry about it at this stage. The only thing I'd recommend is that you remove both CCV grommets from the top of the valve cover, clean them thoroughly, and blow them through with compressed air. Any blockage will prevent crankcase gases from venting into the intake manifold, causing excessive pressure to build up, and result in oil leaks e.g. rear main seal.

Welcome to the addiction. Jeeps are an addiction. They are lots of fun but they require some money to be spent on them.

OK, I have made several 4 hour trips with the XJ. No major issues to report as of yet. The transmission shifts with a jerk here and there and the the turn signal stops one in 10 times used.

:welcome: to xjtalk. Make sure it's the main and not the 3 "o" rings on the oil filter adapter. Common issue that looks like a rear main seal leak.
