Here's some random article on it...

The issue started in the Grand Cherokee because fires were reported after the vehicles were involved in rear-end accidents. The gas tank is located behind the rear axle, and is therefore is easily compromised when the vehicle is hit from behind.

Model years 1993 through 2004 Grand Cherokee, 1993 through 2001 Cherokee and 2002 through 2007 Liberty are now under investigation by NHTSA. Chrysler claims that the investigation will not result in a recall after the company conducted studies themselves into the cars fire saftey. Chrysler claims that the new vehicles to join the investigation “are at no greater risk of exposure to fire in rear end collisions than peer vehicles.”

Grand Cherokee fires have resulted in the death of 284 people in 198 accidents due to the vehicle catching fire, says the Center for Auto Safety (CAS).

At this point there isn’t a recall on the vehicle, but if the recall happens, it will affect over 5 million vehicles and cost Chrysler quite a bit of money.

Well, strange it doesn't affect the early rigs. But it doesn't matter, nobody gets my 31 gal gas tank

And I also saw a news story a little while back that said a lot of the new JKs spontaneously catch fire.... one guy bought his new and the next day it was charcoal.

Ha! Right? Nah, it's been happening apparently. Jeep is refusing to replace them too.

Do you know what's the cause?

On the new JKs? That news story said it was under investigation as to what caused the fire, but I did read that 2010 Wranglers were recalled for the skid plate collecting debris and the heat from the cat would set the debris on fire. I don't think this was the case for this guy since it was brand new and he pretty much drove it straight home for the night.

Soon the only place you'll be able to have a fuel cell is in your lap. That way they'll have all the same protection you do.

Yeah I was pretty surprised how much debris can collect up on that skid plate right under the cat, when I was working on a co-worker's JK a few weeks back...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how our productive congress is investigating "death wobble" among Jeeps.

And the 73-87 Chevy trucks.... but of course that was later found to be a set up by Dateline.
