Jeep looks great, just shocked about the floor pans. I'm sure you'll fix it, just what a job!

Yeah, with the amount of rust you had there I'm surprised that the frame rails there didn't suffer also.

my son's 92 looked like yours. It all depends on the time, effort and money yoiu want to spend. I cut some flat 304 stainless to fit the hole at best I could. I drilled several holes so I could weld it to the main floor support, and then siliconed the edges. I saw this as lasting as long as we would have the jeep, and what I did do would not rust.

i wish i had taken more pictures but when i had ripped up the interior carpet there was actually little puddles of water sitting between the rubber bottom of the carpet and the floor pan leaving no place for that water to escape.. which is why it is like how you see it in the pictures.

the exhaust eventually ate through the sheet metal flooring which im surprised it even lasted a reason about of time after the water started gettin underneath that rubber linning of the interior.. especially here in NJ.. considering the exhaust system does not have a lick of heat sheilding and is roughly... oh idk an inch away from 1/8 gauge sheet metal? not sure if that is how think it is, but you understand what im getting at haha

My point being.. i dont think it got to the frame rails because it was surrounded by the rubber and water haha and they seem to have a much better liberal coating of protectant than the floor did

ps.. sorry i lied to you fellas, i do have some pictures of me ripping up the carpet and finding whats underneath ill upload those as well:http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_4614.jpg

unfortunately, the rust doesnt stop at my floor pans, heres a picture of my trunk floor:http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_8553.jpg
luckily this is only surface rust, if it was fully penetrated i.. i.. i just dont even want to think about that haha but its not so were good! :D

also, i have a spot of rust on the downward slope between the trunk, this is going to be a son of a bitch because im gonna have to do some custom fab on some steel, which i dont have a problem with but definitely going to need some advice on this spot, because i am no expert for sure. heres the pic alsohttp://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_2557.jpg

waaahoooo. started back up on the floor pans today, just did an hr or so of work so far.
pretty basic stuff, just poppin out the pressings holding the old pans in place heres some of the pics
http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_3578.jpg
I originally tried grinding off all the pressings but after i realized i had this amazing carbide chisel and some left over anger from work this week.. this was muchhh faster haha also easier

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_3578.jpg
Moving right along..

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_9939.jpg
and againnnn

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_3203.jpg
Heres a cool angle, can also see here that the chisel did a pretty nice job of taking the pressings of cleanly, also no gouges from the grinder

Pretty much all the way out, just had to cut it loose from the rest of the floor pan underneath the dash panel.

I feel like i should have done how to on Floor pans, but hey everyone does it different?
Thanks for any comments guys, hopefully getting the new pans set and put into place next week.:bang:

Thanks man! just read up on it.. sounds like you used it between the gaps of the sheet metal?? to prevent any.. dare i say.. rust (mainly water) getting between there?

You certainly have more patience and dedication than me ...

I'd have any good bits unbolted ... and the shell carted off to the metal recycler by now.

Looking forward to update pics as well ..

Just a little update... i did some testing yesterday of the exhaust system and the heat that it puts off onto the floor pans.. well lets just say it was quite and interesting test...

I used an infrared heat gun to test a sheet a metal i placed slightly above the muffler and the old rusty floor pan material left around the exhaust piping.

I let my jeep run for about 20 minutes
Within 5 minutes = 90degrees
7 minutes = 104degrees
10minutes 120degrees
and
15 minutes = 142 degrees

I was pretty amazed because that is really really hot, especially for thin sheet metal and even more surprised there was no protection from it, weather the previous owner(s) took it off i dont know, but i know for sure im absolutely adding heat sheilding and maybe even high heat paint onto the under side of the pans.

stay tuned, more pics this weekend!!!!

I haven't found any heat shielding on any XJ yet. The cats will have some built in. My carpets have been cooked above the muffler and I plan to add heat shielding before my next long trip. The best thing is the double layer cookie sheets available anywhere. I have one saved for the purpose.

Mine came with a shield bolted to the body just above the muffler, I can't remember if it goes all the way back to the catalytic converter. Looks like a double wall cookie sheet.

You can see it a little here...

I have run into others that had that hot spot just at the back of the front seat. A working cat makes those mufflers hot

Heres another update on the floor pans.. seems like its taking forever but it is looking good (a gigantic hole in the floor looks good?)):out:

finally got a chance to upload the pics from today:

heres my before and after, also the in between;

Beforehttp://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_1191-1.jpg

Afterhttp://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_7976.jpg

In between:http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_6861.jpg
Started with my favorite tool :).. getting the stupid sheet metal wall out of my way

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_7638.jpg
Wall is out!!

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_0742.jpg
After that i decided to attack this stubborn corner first, really wasnt bad, all i know is that it will be fun to make a custom sheet metal piece for it:sign0181:

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_6822.jpg
Got annoyed with the corner so started cutting around the rust, may or may not have given a E brake cable a boo boo :rolleye0012:

http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg549/lformica2/IMG_7742.jpg
Eventually worked my way around the corner, it was some fun haha

all i have to say is... slow and steady wins the race.. i guess? i will eventually get there with her haha but so far i am very pleased

Damn I'd be sobbing. I can't believe how flimsy those things we have instead of a frame are, and how well they hold up.

Keep the pictures coming. I know we're all looking forward to seeing it better than it was before.
