Hey xj gurus, I need to replace the valve cover gasket on Big Nasty. I was gonna go with the good old cork gasket. And suggestions on a better choice?

A cork one will work fine, but I prefer the rubber gaskets.

Matt had me order a rubberized cork gasket from RockAuto for the new engine. Best of both worlds!

I like the idea of a rubberized cork gasket. Personally I use Ultra Black Oil Resistant Gasket maker by Permatex for a valve cover gasket.

I was going to say I used the rubber seal when I had to replace mine after I purchased my XJ... It was easy to install, and haven't had any issues since... I had a couple of mechanics tell me not to go straight cork, because it will break down and start leaking alot faster... so I would def. say either go with the straight rubber gasket, or get the hybrid cork/rubber gasket if you can...

I think that the cork is thicker and necessary for the older valve covers. The aluminum valve covers I think.

Put a rubber gasket under the 97+ steel cover I put on my 88 4.0. Haven't ran it yet. Was a fel-pro I ordered off Rock Auto and was around 35 bucks.

I have cork on the XJ + black oil resistant RTV gasket maker.
Fel-Pro rubber on MJ

XJ has "seeped" since a few months after I installed it. Only a year old and I'm about ready to replace it...with rubber.

MJ has been dry as a bone for 2 years. You decide.

this is good information! cause im loosing coolant and theres no leaks or any signs thats its leaking but i have to put in coolant like every 3-4 weeks. so im thinking maybe i have a bad head gasket.

When they rebuilt my transmission they found a freeze plug on the back of the block was seeping. I never saw any coolant on the ground.
