Thank you! Well I found this site in my search for advice and much needed help on my 1994 xj. I have already bought a 6.5" rc lift and 36x12.50x15 ss tsl's on 15x10 black steel wheels. I am now trying to figure out what else I will need for this to happen. I have seen the sye kits and cv shafts for the np231 but i have the np242 and am lost on what i need if i need anything else.

So, do you have fenders on your xj? If you id advise on either cutting them off or relocating them higher since you will rub( my friend just did a 6.5 rc lift and has 32s and she is still tearing up her fenders, im at a 7.5 lift and im still kinda rubbing in the rear)

Also with the sye, im not running one and neither is my friend, no grinding or vibrations and it still wheels great.

It really depends. We have people with pre-97 XJ with 6.5" lift and no transfer case drop or SYE.

I personally have a NP242 and recently installed a SYE from Tom Woods (http://www.4xshaft.com/) Tom has amazing products and excellent customer service. Basically you get a replacement main shaft for the NP242 (shorter) a yoke and a rear drive shaft. It's about $900 up front, but you get the core money back. It's cost about $450. Personally I like the NP242 over the NP231 because of the 4x4 on street abilities.

If you're building an off road rig, it might be cheaper to go with a NP231. The aftermarket support is much better for the 231.

The 36" tires as a rule are too big for a Dana 30, and marginal for a Chrysler 8.25. If you are unlucky enough to have a Dana 35 in the rear it's a near guarantee you'll snap a shaft with the 36's.

Now you can build the axles up, truss, chrome molley shafts, but again it depends on how you drive it and where you drive it and what you are driving on.

That should get you started, I'll let the others jump in here that have more experience.

:welcome: to the site!

If you can find one. Oh and replace the steering box with one from a Durango.

wow! thanks a lot guys! i knew i came to the right place. ok, well at the moment i am not planning on wheeling in anything serious, this project is just getting started and i know i have a lot of work ahead of me. so bear with me if i come up with some dumb or crazy stuff. now how hard is it really to find a d44 for the front, and i wish i did have the chryco rear, unfortunately i have the d35. what should i do on the rear. now for the trimming, how do you determine how much to cut. my ex had a 98 xj sport and it was outfitted to the max. i would like to get there in the near future, but anyways it had a 6.5 and 36". What year durango do i get the steering box from, and will it match up or will it need to be modified. reason i ask is because my steering box is leaking anyways and if that is a better route, i'd rather do that. thanks again for everyone's help. i really appreciate it!

I cut my fenders completely off, pretty much where the top of my fenders sat is where I cut. As for the d44, here in AZ theyre all over the place but you just have to look. .craigslist and junkyards would be my first option

The D44 rears came out of 87-89 XJs and some Comanches.

Thanks a bunch! what about the durango steering box.

Those are found in the V8 Durangos. You can tell the difference by looking at the round end. It is visibly larger. This is the hydraulic piston area. So it translates into more force on the steering. It is a true bolt in. Might want to upgrade to the V8 ZJ tie rod while you are at it. It is much stronger and can be gotten at the wrecking yard too.

I am a Corpus Christi Texas Boy and have been all my life, I am married and have a beautiful baby boy who is already showing signs that he is a hunter at the age of 1. It was around 8 years ago that a good ol boy (now a brother) took me dove huntin. Well it didn't take long for me to get hooked after dove huntin for a week or so he showed me what waterfowlin was all about. Been doin it ever since.
