Try shifting the transmission into neutral before you shift into 4x4 to ease the stress on it.

Is this low range or high range?

Park or Neutral....are your RPM's up?
Mines have always grunted abit going into low, the leverage on the linkage isnt the greatest, get under there and lube it up.

Theres not many transfer cases that like getting shoved into low range whilst the vehicles moving.

Instant engine braking, wheel lockup or broken stuff ... can be the usual results ... ;) .. :D

Stop,
Auto in neutral,
Shift into low range.

Will pop straight in unless the linkages need adjustment as already mentioned.

If you have an automatic transmission, there is some pressure there to spin the gears, and when you move from hi to low range there is a neutral position. In that space of time the gears rev up and will not go in because they are moving too fast. I turn my engine off and then engage lo range.

I come to a stop. Place the transmission in park or neutrual. Shift to neutral on the transfer case, pause then put it in 4LO. Drop the transmission into drive and do a wheel stand! :driving:
