ok i have a 95 xj 4.0 it has fresh antifreeze an new thermostat new heater hoses and water pump but after driving for a wile i can smell the sweet smell of antifreeze not from inside only when i walk around to the front. now i checked the sensor in the thermostat thats fine but i found out thats the one for the electric fan "fan works" i looked it up and they say theres one on the back of the block. i cant find it but i know the wires disconnected. i got the jeep from my girls dad n he said they unplugged it at a shop for some reason. i was going to replace it with a mechanical gauge but again i cant find it. does anyone have pics of it or anything the chiltons manual is very vague on ware it is at.
also the electric fan isnt kickin on and im not steaming out the rad cap so im assuming its not over heating im full on fluid there aint any leaks or fluid laying around

also i know the clutch fan is good but the shround deteriorated but im pickin one up tomarrow when i go to the junk yard

i drove it 35 miles the other day mix of highway and city and it didnt seem to over heat "75 80 mph highway" "20 to 35 mph city"

Rich, that Jeep has two temp sensors. One on the back of the block goes to the ECM, which turns on your efan. You will have to hook that one back up. The other goes to your gauge/idiot light.

ok so the one on the front is for my idiot light? i herd it was the other way around. but anyway i cant find the sensor on the back.

and any type of mechanical gauge that u would recomend i got an autometer but the prob is to long to fit int he thremostat housing

I would just use a few brass fittings to make it fit in there right.

The sending unit for the gauge/light is on the back drivers side of the cylinder head and the sending unit for the auxiliary fan is on the thermostat housing. Here's a pic from my '92 factory service manual to help locate it, '95 should be the same.

watching this thread close because I got one that is unplugged also, but
it's on the firewall between washer resivour and motor. Doen't look like its ever
been hooked up might be a factory left over.

HO (91+) will have a sensor where the brass plug is, this is the sensor that reports to the computer, it uses two wires.

This plug (single wire) at the back of the head is what drives the gauge. It works on variable resistance to ground, kinda like the oil pressure sender.

On a Renix (87-90) the ECU temp sender is in the block, under the manifolds:
