I built mine and it works fine but having my 38 back there cost me a ton of visibility. Gained a lot of interior space though. I wouldn't put a tire on the roof, lifted vehicles are top heavy enough.

cool! looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Shouldn't be too hard to build. You could make it swing down or out pretty easily too.

yeah i have a spare mount from my old camper with the same bolt pattern as the jeep. im going to get a hitch extenchen so i can still tow without having to remove the carrier im also moving the tag out to the carrier

I made mine to fold down. It has two 3/4 bolts in the upright part. One for a pivot and the other I remove to fold down. I used bolts so I can tighten it so it doesn't rattle, too much.

im makin my fold to the drivers side im going to put a bolt in the top and a pin for now on the bottem when i can afford it im going to get a swing gate latch to pull some tension down to hopfuly make it not rattle but for now its only gettin a 235/75 the biggest after i do the lift is a 31x10.50. i got my design i just got to get some work so i can get the steel

A good friend of mine (Crazymoose) did this just recently,
With the help of another good friend (BoringDave) they created a fold down, hitch mounted spare tire carrier..... This slides into the hitch of his ORFab rear bumper. Made from 2"x2" square tubing, and some 1/4" thick angle plate. Grade 8 hardware for the hinge, and a swing pin clevis pin as a locking point. There is also a hole in the hitch sleeve, and a nut welded on as a bung, to create a pinch point to help reduce rattles.
It does rattle still a TINY bit,...but C'mon..... this is a 35" spare on something slid into the hitch.
The spare is a 35x12.50x15 Goodyear Kevlar MTR

I currently have mine on the roof, only reason being is that I got 2 spares with vehicle so making use of the roof space, but when I get the larger tires I will be switching to rear carrier as it will be alot heavier!

Looking got something that swings outwards rather than downwards, I have uses and other ideas for the tow bar, LOL.

But that idea is a great one and uses the tow hitch well and is strong too. Well thought idea! :)

Yea, try to put a 33" up on the roof! It ain't happenin. Was a big enough PITA to pull it off the hub and put it back on when I did my shocks, lifting it an inch or so.

There's always more than one way to skin a cat, so I'm definitely interested in seeing other designs.

Try puttin a 35 up there. Ain't happening. I went with Detours for my tire carrier. It's a hitch mounted one. He does awesome fab work. He works with you durin the process as well.

Yeah so I think when larger tires get funded I will have to invest or make rear tire carrier but still retain tow hitch as I use mine regularly.

I can imagine. Ya know, I'm thinking it might make sense to go with Detours on this one. I'd spend the money ($239 I think?) on steel and parts, not to mention a welder I don't have, and then wonder every time I hit I bump if I was going to see my spare bouncing down the trail in my rear view mirror because my shady (at best) welding job broke loose.
