i have seen pics of them even read alot of posts on them. alot of negativity in those posts. my jeep club & i want to build a dually xj that can actually mud. we dont do very much crawling at all down here in the swamps. we want to stick around the 33" tire size.
here is one thought...toyota dually axle out of a motorhome or uhaul truck. they have 8" rings & i can regear them to 4:10. we have a few boneyards that we are going to start getting measurements from.
another thought is to install the d60 or 70 . i dont like that one lol . would seriously limit ground clearances.
does anyone have any ideas?
we have a 94 xj 4 door 4x4 with a fresh 4.5 stroker in it as the guinea pig.

I think the tandem axle XJ would be neat......

Google dual wheel adaptors, then pick a pattern you want.

Is there a reason to go with the dually, like carrying capacity? Just seems like your gonna make a capable vehicle harder to maneuver. I'm in a dually truck a lot and i gotta say it sucks, the extra tires catch everything. Just wondering.

Isnt there a tandem axel green dodge out there? (watch top truck challenge) Whats the point of that other than looks?

I thought most of the reason was a higher tongue weight capacity. Additional traction of course, but in this case I would think looks. That Comanche looks pretty cool though.

Been seeing that truck for years, its called T-rex. It was actually modeled after the Dodge Ram T-Rex concept.

Dually's are for increased load capacity, that's the reasoning behind them at any rate. With an XJ it would be for looks, the "sturdy" unibody non-frame would buckle before you reached the load limit of the dually axle I would think. Now if you boxed the uni-non frame with say, 3/16" metal in a U shape, welded it firmly in place then added the dually, you might have something that could carry the full load capacity. Just saying...

Ah ok, once again...whats the point for making it dually or even tandem...unless you want it for looks but imo it looks like sh*t

I think dually's are great on Tractor-trailer rigs.

Hey guys and gals, the dually concept on Jeeps is not new. It goes back to say something like the 20s when guys would put dual wheels front and rear for mud and sand on Model As. I saw my first dually CJ2A in about 1956. Did a great joob of puling our single tired Jeep GPW out of the mud. Yes duals are primarily for heavy loads, but in the 4X4 world they are used in mud to keep on top of it. If I read the OP correctly, that is the intention. It has been done many times before and will many more times.

The easiest way is to get a dual wheel adapter and another set of wheels and bolt it up in about 10 minutes.

The dual axle on T Rex worked quite well in rocks, which is what he designed it for. At TTC he walked right through the rock garden there with no problems at all and received a very high score for it. It was a cake walk for that rig.

The tandem axle provides more driving wheels and a better break over angle.

Oh yeah, Crustacean, that thing was awesome when it was built. I would think those front dually tires would put a gigantic amount of stress on the front steering, suspension, and axle.

I agree with you. and let's not forget the extra tire expenses. they can look cool but are they really worth all the effort and cost? kinda like super stretch limos... ok, you made your statement, now let's see you turn that thing around.

we were mostly doing it for fun & for the sand & mud. i think it might win the out there class at jeep beach & jeeptoberfest. we also are partnered up with a local baton school here & we pull the floats with our jeeps in parades alot. i think it would just look really cool there too

ok on the tech note, i went to a jyard today. the place has lots of hard to find stuff. however, they seem to think that everything they have there is made of pure gold. also, if you want it with a very small discount then, you pull it LOL but do not mess anything up when you do LOL. they didnt have the yota rears but, they have tons of dually rears. i found a d70 with 3.73. the measurements on it are snug on the xj but, i think it will work. now i just need to either find it again elsewhere or come up with $700.

found the dually toyota axle today under an old uhaul. came to the conclusion that it isnt what i was wanting. it appears to be nothing more than a kit. it is also making a really rough grinding noise when i hooked the electric drill to it ( to spin it).
guess we are going to find another cool thing to do with the extra xj. thanks for all of the cool pics & responses.
