I've been thinking about putting some red mesh (larger hole mesh of course) behind my grill, or maybe using some red paint or SOMETHING. Here's an photo shopped mock-up of kinda what I'm talking about.

Kind of outlined a little

More filled in (I know I didn't draw it perfectly lol)

What do you think? Should I consider either one of these, something else, or nothing at all?

I like the blacked out look. But, (and I can't believe I'm about to say this), some red LEDs or ropes might look pretty cool hidden back in there.

mud looks good there as well

Haha yes, mud does look very good there!

I hadn't thought of lights before.... interesting thought. I wouldn't be able to have them on while driving though, so I won't get a ticket. I love the blacked out look too. My amber lights are actually temp-tinted now, and tinted "angry eyes" that may be going away.

are we just rude cantab ... or is thinking ....

micheal "brasscatz" hasseldoofdoof ...

justified .... :D :D

Either one of those thoughts would look better than the flyscreen mesh I wrap around the grille during grasshopper season ... :D

Have a look at the ricer options in mesh too .... from where ever it would be sold over there ... http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-Universal-Mesh-1200mm-x-280mm-Red.aspx?pid=155330#Description

Hmm... not bad! I'd like to see what it would look like on an XJ for sure.

:D Funny you should say that.... as a young driving teen 10 years ago, I would've LOVED that! I even installed a little LED light bar on my old Trans Am... briefly though! LOL

ROFL Hasseldoofdoof! I think he's bigger in Germany than he was here... singing "Jump in My Car" and all that! (If you haven't seen that video... WATCH IT!!!!)

That mesh looks pretty good. I'd like to see a photo that wasn't so close up so I could see better the spacing in scale. I'd want fairly tight mesh, but not too tight as to restrict too much air flow to the rad. Do you have any pictures of the mesh you use installed?

If I can find the picture that I got the idea from, I'll post it up

I wonder how much more you would have to clean it out if you use a netting of some sort if you live in an area with a lot of flying insects? I'ld go with painting or some led lights.

Good point. Mosquitoes get pretty bad here sometimes.

Nahhh ... its just the flyscreen door stuff you get from the hardware store ... I only use it when the bugs are in season ... It restricts highway speed airflow a fair bit - so ya cooling system needs to be in good nick.

Lots .... but its a damned if you do ... damned if you dont, situation ....

.... On the side of the road tho - its a lot easier to clean a gazillion grasshoppers/locusts off the mesh after 20/30 minutes driving ..... than the aircon or radiator cores ... ;)

There you go! That looks good! Minus the fact that it DOES look a bit pink!

I'm not sure that there are many places here in the U.S. that have that severe of a problem, but I definitely see the benefit in that situation.

Look what I found. Just paint the color of choice. Shipping a bit high though, I think.

Also, if I go the light route... cheap, small, could work!

I put a mesh grill in my nissan before. All i did was buy leaf guards for gutters at home depot and trimmed em to fit in the grill. was like 5 bucks for 3 strips of it. 1 strip will be enough to do a xj grill. its the same pattern as the pink one up there. In fact i cut pieces for my xj grill but decided against it. You can kinda see it on my nissan grill here. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b249/bigjim350/1996%20Bagged%20Nissan/0a444121.jpg

I was at Home Depot today too.... I didn't think to look for the gutter screen!

Its easy to cut with industrial grade scissors, side cutters, or tin snips. Then you just use silver arts and crafts type wire from walmart to attatch it to the grill.
